Creator of Cheez Doodles Dies at 90

Morrie R. Yohai, the creator of the crunchy, finger-staining orangeCheez Doodles snack, has died at his home on Long Island. He was 90.

…Yohai died of cancer on July 27 at his Long Island home in Kings Point, his son, Robbie, said Tuesday.

His father was always amused that people thought the cheddar cheese snack he produced at his Bronx factory was the highlight of his life, Robbie Yohai said. His father’s wide-ranging interests extended to Jewish mysticism and poetry, and the snack was only one of many things his father did, Yohai said.

But it’s Cheez Doodles that he will be remembered for.

Yohai developed the small tubular snack at his Old London Foods factory in the 1950s. The company already was selling Dipsy Doodles rippled corn chips, which were made with a machine that spit them out under pressure through a nozzle shaped like the letter W.

“He applied a similar concept for the Cheez Doodles,” adapting the machine to extrude liquefied cornmeal into a “more roundish, pinhole shape,” said Robbie Yohai.

Lawman’s Grandchildren Outraged; “Would You Issue A Pardon For Someone Who Made His Living As A Thief”

…The showdown between frontier lawman Pat Garrett and notorious outlaw Billy the Kid has fascinated the American public for nearly 130 years with its classic, Old West storyline.

As it turns out, the feud isn’t completely over.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is considering granting a posthumous pardon to Billy the Kid, angering descendants of Garrett who call it an insult to recognize such a violent outlaw.

Three of the late lawman’s grandchildren sent a letter to Richardson this week that asked him not to pardon the outlaw, saying such an act would represent an “inexcusable defamation” of Garrett.

“If Billy the Kid was living amongst us now, would you issue a pardon for someone who made his living as a thief and, more egregiously, who killed four law enforcement officers and numerous others?” the Garrett family wrote.

The issue has resurfaced because Richardson asked a New Mexico columnist earlier this year to check with historians to measure their support for issuing a pardon. The governor plans to…

Pretty solid villainy so far, but it’s not until we see Kurgan in present day 1986 that he really comes into his own. Adopting a goth-punk look and a penchant for flippant one-liners, he is a pale, gravel-voiced menace. Founder Julian Assange Says “No Reason” to Doubt Reliability of Documents

…WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said Monday he believes there is evidence of war crimes in the thousands of pages of leaked U.S. military documents relating to the war in Afghanistan.

The remarks came after WikiLeaks, a whistle-blowing group, posted some 91,000 classified U.S. military records over the past six years about the war online, including unreported incidents of Afghan civilian killings and covert operations against Taliban figures.

The White House, Britain and Pakistan have all condemned the release of the documents, one of the largest unauthorized disclosures in military history.

A gay priest sex scandal has rocked the Catholic Church in Italy today after a weekly news magazine released details of a shock investigation it had carried out.A journalist from Panorama magazine, filmed three priests as they attended gay nightspots and and had casual sex.
