Eleven Great Playable Video Game Satires

They’re games, but they’re also parodies of games. Sweet!

…better than creator Ian Bogost himself: “You get a cow. You can click on it. In six hours, you can click it again. Clicking earns you clicks. You can buy custom ‘premium’ cows through micropayments (the Cow Clicker currency is called ‘mooney’), and you can buy your way out of the time delay by spending it. You can publish feed stories about clicking your cow, and you can click friends’ cow clicks in their feed stories. Cow Clicker is Facebook games distilled to their essence.” Plus you don’t even need Flash…

DIY Graphing Calculator Is Built From Open Source Hardware

A home-brewed graphing calculator called Open SciCal promises to put a powerful machine built entirely from open-source hardware into the pockets of quant

…A home-brewed graphing calculator called Open SciCal promises to put a powerful machine built entirely from open-source hardware into the pockets of quant jocks and statisticians.
This is for the alpha nerds of the geek kingdom, says Matt Stack, who built Open SciCal. The calculator used to be the ultimate status symbol among the nerdiest of the nerds and I wanted to bring that back.
Open SciCal has a 4.3-inch color touchscreen and is just a little bigger than an iPhone. The device uses a BeagleBoard, a low-power, single-board computer that’s based on the same 1-GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor that drives most sophisticated smartphones today. It also has a 8-GB SD card, Wi-Fi capability and can run a web browser.
It’s about the same weight as my Logitech G9 mouse (which weighs about 1.6 pounds), says Stack.
A graphing calculator can take data sets and plot graphs in addition to running scientific functions on it. Many graphing calculators allow users to attach sensors to them so they can log data directly…

Sperm May Be Harmed by Exposure to BPA

In one of the first human studies of its kind, researchers have found that urinary concentrations of the controversial chemical Bisphenol A, or BPA, may be related to decreased sperm quality and sperm concentration.

…However, the researchers are quick to point out that these results are preliminary and more study is needed. Several studies have documented adverse effects of BPA on semen in rodents, but none are known to have reported similar relationships in humans.
BPA is a common chemical that’s stirred much controversy in the media lately over its safety. Critics say that BPA mimics the body’s own hormones and may lead to negative health effects. BPA is most commonly used to make plastics and epoxy resins used in food and beverage cans, and people are exposed primarily through diet, although other routes are possible. More than 6 billion pounds of BPA are produced annually.
The new study, published online in the journal Reproductive Toxicology, suggests that more research should focus on BPA and health effects in adults, says John Meeker, assistant professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
Meeker is the lead author on the study, along with Russ Hauser, the…

Rumors: 7-inch iPad, new iPods, early iPhone refresh

All of it could be coming as early as late 2010 or early 2011.

…even if they are ready by the end of August however, Apple typically announces new iPods in September. One of the new models is said to be a nano, while another is a touch. The third is so far a mystery, but could be a Shuffle based on a miniaturized touchscreen. The source also mentions the possibility of a three-inch touchscreen, though which iPod would get it is not known.Apple is also believed to be mostly finished developing a new iPad model, one with a 7-inch screen as opposed to the 9.7-inch LCD on current tablets. The hardware could be launched later this year, or early in 2011. Apple has long been said to be prototyping a 7-inch screen, even as far back as 2007….

Boston Celtics Close to Signing Shaquille O’Neal

According to multiple sources it looks like the Boston Celtics are on the verge of signing Shaquille O’Neal to a contract for next season. Kicker is they want him to come off the bench…

…from the field? Therefore to Shaq’s credit he still would be justified in starting for the Celtics over Jermaine O’Neal in the absence of Kendrick Perkins during his recovery.
Celtics fans will likely be thinking ‘WTF?!’ when they hear the news that Shaq may be signing with their team. But on sober second thought they will realize that if Shaq does agree to a limited role in the regular season, it could mean big things for them come playoff time. The Celtics will need all the big bodies they can get to deal with the Dwight Howard’s, Chris Bosh’s, and with a little luck Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum’s of the league.
The Celtics are also likely thinking about the Offense/Defense possibilities of having two O’Neals on their roster. Jermaine O’Neal may be limited offensively due to his knee, but he’s still a solid shot blocker and defensive specialist as he’s proven the last few years with the Heat and Raptors. And what better way to complement that defense than to have the Big Diesel come off the bench and attack…

E-mail, once the ‘Net’s killer app, has been eclipsed by time spent on social networking and games. Only on mobile devices does e-mail retain its old dominance. Social networking now has a 22.7 percent share of the PC pie, while online games get a 10.2 percent share.

Meanwhile, the jury is still out on e-mail which now commands a paltry 8.3 percent of consumer time, a drop of 28 percent from June 2009.
But the media survey company notes that at the same time computer e-mail use is in decline, mobile users are ramping up the activity e-mailing now consumes 41.6 percent of all US mobile Internet time.
“Despite the almost unlimited nature of what you can do on the Web, 40 percent of US online time is spent on just three activities social networking, playing games and emailing,” noted Nielsen research analyst Dave Martin, “leaving a whole lot of other sectors fighting for a declining share of the online pie.”
Those “other sectors” include…
