Facebook says ad spending is rocketing
Aug 5th
The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
…yahoobuzzThe very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s most prominent liaison to Madison Avenue, said in an interview with BusinessWeek published Wednesday that the company’s biggest advertisers have boosted their spending on Facebook by tenfold, or even 20-fold, in the past year.
“Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us,” Sandberg told BusinessWeek. “They started buying with us a year ago. Now, they’re going big.”
Not that long ago, the common wisdom was that advertising on a social network simply wouldn’t translate into profits, a position held by figures as high-up as Google’s chief financial officer. His rationale was that people use social networks for communication and connection with friends, not for researching potential future buying decisions the way they would with a search engine….

States That do not Nickle and Dime You on Taxes
Aug 5th
Want to make your retirement dollars go further? Move to these states to reduce your tax bite.
…Source: sxc.hu Photo: ctoocheckOne of the things that can eat into your retirement funds is taxes. No matter where you live in the U.S., you will have to pay federal taxes. However, state income and sales taxes are a completely different matter. These taxes vary according to where you live, and can make a big difference how much money you have to use at your disposal during retirement. Kiplinger offers a really great interactive map that offers insight into states where the tax situation can make retirement more desirable. Here are some of the results:No income taxesIf you want to avoid income taxes altogether, you can try moving to Washington, Nevada, Alaska, Texas, South Dakota, Wyoming or Florida. It is also worth noting that New Hampshire and Tennessee only tax interest and dividends, so other income is safe. These states can provide you with a way to avoid paying state taxes on your hard-earned income. Watch out, though: Only New Hampshire and Alaska have no sales tax to go with their lack of income…

Man Calls 911 For Ride To Liquor Store; Gets Busted For Pot
Aug 3rd
He wanted a ride to the liquor store; instead, he got a lift to the jail. A Florida man was charged Saturday night with misusing 911 and possession of marijuana after he had already been warned that his call to 911 for a ride to a liquor store would result in his arrest.
…Two ideologically diverse advocates on Wednesday echoed an earlier call by a coalition of drug-policy reform groups by condemning a series of recent raids by the Drug Enforcement Administration on medical marijuana collectives operating legally under state law….Your Dream Job: Denver Pot Reviewer Gets Paid To Get High (7)A Denver man gets paid to smoke cannabis and write about it as one of the first professional medical marijuana critics in the country. Denver’s Westword alternative newspaper has hired the man, who goes by the name “William Breathes,” to review marijuana dispensaries and the quality of the cannabis they sell….County Will Pay For Marijuana Plants Stolen From Patient (6)A Washington medical marijuana patient whose pot plants were stolen on Sunday will probably get money — but not his plants — back from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. The plants, which are now being held as evidence in the criminal case against two men accused of stealing them, may be needed in court, and will likely…

Most Internet time now spent with social networks, games
Aug 3rd
E-mail, once the ‘Net’s killer app, has been eclipsed by time spent on social networking and games. Only on mobile devices does e-mail retain its old dominance. Social networking now has a 22.7 percent share of the PC pie, while online games get a 10.2 percent share.

Meanwhile, the jury is still out on e-mail which now commands a paltry 8.3 percent of consumer time, a drop of 28 percent from June 2009.
But the media survey company notes that at the same time computer e-mail use is in decline, mobile users are ramping up the activity e-mailing now consumes 41.6 percent of all US mobile Internet time.
“Despite the almost unlimited nature of what you can do on the Web, 40 percent of US online time is spent on just three activities social networking, playing games and emailing,” noted Nielsen research analyst Dave Martin, “leaving a whole lot of other sectors fighting for a declining share of the online pie.”
Those “other sectors” include…
