HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sex scandal!

Word just broke that Mark Hurd, the CEO of HP resigned due to a sexual harassment investigation! Whoa.

…Lesjak has asked to be excluded, and HP declined to answer if Jon Rubinstein was being considered when we asked.

Update: We liveblogged the media call — check it after the break!

Update 2: A quick note from the investor call, which mostly repeated the same info — interim CEO Cathie Lesjak said that although Mark Hurd was a “strong leader, at the end of the day, he didn’t drive our initiatives — it was the organization that supported Mark in driving those initiatives.” Ouch — given Mark’s recent history of saying things like “we didn’t buy Palm to get into the smartphone business,” it certainly seems like he might have been a little disconnected.
3:32PM And that’s it! There’s an investor call coming up, we’ll let you know if we hear anything there.

3:32PM PC Mag: Any litigation here? HP: Nothing has been filed, we have an agreement with Mark in place.

3:32PM Next question (from us!): Will Jon Rubinstein be considered for the CEO position? HP: We’re not identifying any candidates at this time.

3:31PM…

Rumors: 7-inch iPad, new iPods, early iPhone refresh

All of it could be coming as early as late 2010 or early 2011.

…even if they are ready by the end of August however, Apple typically announces new iPods in September. One of the new models is said to be a nano, while another is a touch. The third is so far a mystery, but could be a Shuffle based on a miniaturized touchscreen. The source also mentions the possibility of a three-inch touchscreen, though which iPod would get it is not known.Apple is also believed to be mostly finished developing a new iPad model, one with a 7-inch screen as opposed to the 9.7-inch LCD on current tablets. The hardware could be launched later this year, or early in 2011. Apple has long been said to be prototyping a 7-inch screen, even as far back as 2007….

How to Build a Better Rocket

Sony and the rocket clubs worked with a group of high school students, to build rocket with a Sony VAIO laptop as its “avionics package” (i.e. the rocket’s brains).

…There are many things that could go wrong when you launch an entire laptop as part of a rocket. A laptop needs to be able to handle some serious Gs (especially when the parachute deploys–the G forces greatly increase for a brief moment when the parachutes open). Second, a notebook adds considerable weight to the rocket, which can prevent the rocket from flying as high as it otherwise could….

Is AT&T Banning Pre-Release Dell Streaks?

AT&T may have banned pre-release Dell Streaks from working on the company’s 3G network.

…T may have banned pre-release Dell Streaks from working on the company’s 3G network. Several posts on MoDaCo’s Android forum suggest beta users have been cut off from using voice and data services in the US, leaving the devices to be solely connected via Wi-Fi.The service interruption appears to be a result of the finished beta program, which effectively cancels service on SIM cards provided for the beta program. Although several users suggest a separate SIM card reconnects their devices, others have encountered unsupported device errors….

iPad management tools include camera reference

A reference in documents for the iPad’s enterprise management tools may back the presence of a camera in next-generation hardware.

…A reference in documents for the iPad’s enterprise management tools may back the presence of a camera in next-generation hardware, according to AppleInsider. In configuring an iPad, IT departments can choose to restrict a number of freedoms, such as Safari or iTunes access, or the amount of times a login can be tried before a unit wipes clean. Mentioned as one option in a PDF file is the ability to restrict camera use, even though that technology is currently missing. While the reference could just be a mistake carried over from iPhone documentation, Apple is believed to be working on a camera for a second-generation iPad, or have even abandoned plans for putting a camera in first-generation models. Early parts showed space for a MacBook-style webcam. The feature carried over into final production units, suggesting that Apple was forced to scrap webcam plans at the last minute. Future iPads could in theory support FaceTime calls….

Google Crowned "King of Malware"

Google has been crowned the ‘king of malware’ by security company Barracuda Networks, linking to twice as much malware as search rivals Bing, Yahoo and Twitter combined.

…, Google accounted for 69 percent of all malware found, with Yahoo at 18 percent, Bing (which supplies Yahoo search) at 12 percent, and Twitter on 1 percent.
Artwork: Chip TaylorAs for the trend topics that drive malware in search results, the gap between one appearing on Twitter and in search results varied from 1.2 days on Google to 4.3 days in Bing, and 4.8 days on Yahoo. This suggests that one reason for Google’s popularity in the malware stakes is simply is responsiveness in picking up on these trending subjects. Malware embedded in search simply follows this.
The other is perhaps its outright popularity. According to a recent comScore analysis, 62.6 percent of all US search traffic is on Google’s site, well ahead of yahoo’s 18.9 percent and Bing’s 12.7 percent.
Interestingly, Barracuda’s malware percentages line up almost exactly with these market share numbers, which suggests that this might be the dominant factor.
Barracuda also has some more fascinating data on Twitter, a company whose…

AT&T: “We will be the premier carrier for Windows Phone 7″

Without question, AT&T’s wireless growth these past few years has been largely based on iPhone — and with apparently good reason, if you look at the numbers. As far as other platforms go, however, it’s not been as rosy.

…patsy I see what you’re saying. It’s definitely unusual, that’s for sure. However, that’s part of what makes it so alluring. The fact that icons AREN’T static and that new content from the cloud can intermix with your phone is kind of interesting. Some may interpret it as annoying, but I think it might be awesome.Again, I’m reserving judgment till I can try one out, but these videos I’ve seen leave me very hopeful. Transitions are smooth like butter, things look bubbly and futuristic. The oversize text is also unusual. I think the interface can be pretty intuitive.Just add in a couple things and we might have a winner here.I’m certain you agree that the UI can’t possibly be compared to anything else out there, right?…
