Are Consumers Smart Enough to Buy Electric Cars?

The U.S. auto market is about to be inundated with electrified vehicle options, but without widespread initiatives to educate drivers, the new wave of electrification could crash and burn before these cars get off the lot.

…If you build it they will come. Starting in Q4 2010, that’s what the Big Three and other manufacturers are banking on as they begin to roll out the first serious wave of electric vehicles to hit the market since the 1990s. International representatives from GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, and dozens of manufacturers, utilities, EVSE suppliers, experts, and enthusiasts convened last week at Plug-in 2010 in San Jose to prepare. The principal theme uniting the disparate stakeholders was a call to raise consumer awareness for the changes to come.
Although EVs and plug-in hybrids represent 1 percent of global automobiles, this segment is expanding as consumers seek ways to save money and reduce consumption of foreign oil. During the gas price spikes of 2008, U.S. buyers of electrified solutions such as the Toyota Prius reached 3 percent. Manufacturers believe it’ll happen again, and when it does, consumer commitment will escalate from there. Even now, “early adopters and do-it-yourselfers have created…

Effects of BP oil spill will be felt for years to come

Now that BP’s damaged Gulf well appears under control, scientists are struggling to answer two questions: How much oil ended up in the Gulf, and what will be the long-term effects?

…I just returned to Texas after spending several days on Alabama beaches. The cleanup workers did a great job of cleaning the beaches of oil above the water line. What’s left locally, however, can be found by swimming in about three to four feet of water. Put on a swim mask and every several yards or so parallel to the beach you’ll find an “Oil cookie” in the sand. Most of the tar balls have sunken and have mixed with the sand/shells. Most are staying just below the low tide line and some of them have broken up and have washed up into the shell ridge at water’s edge. The number of these oil cookies was not overwhelming where I was, but where they’re located could be sporadic. If I was in charge of the cleanup, I’d hire swimmers/near shore boats and give them swimmasks/plexiglass bottom boxes and cleanup bags and see how many of those sunken tar balls they could find. I found several swimming off the hotel beach without trying very hard. At the moment, they’re still on top of the sand out in the water. After…

German soccer gets ruling on Ramadan fasting

BERLIN A Muslim group and German soccer authorities said Wednesday they have determined that professional Muslim players may break their fast during the holy month of Ramadan. The announcement followed a dispute involving second-division club FSV Frankfurt, which last year gave a formal warning to three of its players for fasting.During Ramadan, devout Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining even from water. The club had a clause in contracts stating that wasn’t allowed without its express permission.Germany’s Central Council of Muslims said it sought advice from Al-Azhar in Egypt, the pre-eminent theological institute of Sunni Islam, and elsewhere.Al-Azhar ruled that if a player is obliged to perform under a contract that is his only source of income, if he has to play matches during Ramadan, and if fasting affects his performance, then he can break his fast, the council said. The European Council for Fatwa and Research…

Amazon Connects With Facebook, but Doesn’t Kiss and Tell

…Amazon has launched a new feature that connects users to their Facebook profiles, and then makes product suggestions based on their likes and other activity on the social network but the online retailer also stresses that it will not share any of the data it has about its users or their purchasing behavior with Facebook. The new feature uses the Facebook Platform (formerly Facebook Connect), which was rolled out at the F8 conference in April, and allows websites and publishers to integrate their services with the network and pull data using the Facebook open-graph API.

After you click to connect your account, which brings up the familiar Facebook Connect authorization window, Amazon creates a profile page with product recommendations for example, music suggestions based on your profile and related activity on Facebook, such as bands you have added as favorites as well as items that are popular with your friends and social network on Facebook. In a nice touch, it even provides gift suggestions for people…

BP CEO Tony Hayward Banished to Siberia

Hayward’s new position will be as a non-executive director on the board of TNK-BP, Russia’s third-largest oil company.

…stake in TNK-BP.

BP CEO Tony Hayward.
BP is scrambling to rebuild it’s devastated image in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion which killed 11 rig workers and caused oil to leak into the Gulf of Mexico.
Comments made by Hayward in the early days of the spill response such as I would like my life back and that the spill was relatively tiny compared to the size of the Gulf of Mexico erupted into a public relations nightmare for the company which they have yet to recover from.
Dudley, an American, is said to be a softspoken character, and BP hopes that he can broadcast a positive image to both the government and the public as it launches a major restructuring process aimed at getting what was once Britain’s largest company back on its feet.

Dudley was in London on Monday to attend the board meeting discussing the company’s reshuffling and Hayward’s severance package. Hayward will receive a $1.6 million payoff a year’s salary.
The tragedy of the Macondo well explosion and subsequent…

Massive Green Roof Helps Postal Service Deliver Big Energy

Green roofs, green buildings and an energy management system has put the United States Postal Service on the fast track to its 2015 energy reduction goal.

…WASINGTON, DC Green roofs, green buildings and an energy management system has put the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) on the fast track to its 2015 energy reduction goal.
The USPS said Thursday it is more than two thirds of the way to reducing energy use by 30 percent by 2015.
An impressive component of the agency’s multi-pronged energy strategy is its green roof topping its Morgan mail processing facility in Midtown Manhattan. Covering nearly 2.5 acres, the year-old green roof is the largest of its kind in New York City.
The roof is meeting or outperforming the agency’s early estimates. For example, it is on track to reduce polluted storm water runoff 75 percent in the summer and 40 percent in the winder. It is enjoying a 40 percent per month reduction in energy use, with average monthly energy expenses about 15 percent lower that previous levels, also due to the replacement of 1,600 windows and other energy-saving measures.
“A year ago, the Postal Service projected the green roof would help the Morgan…

Matt Simmons’ oil spill claims; fear-mongering or credible?

Matt Simmons has long been revered in the energy business, but has lately been making very irresponsible and sensational claims that don’t seem to hold up to scrutiny.

…where I also presented. (See his presentation here). He claimed in his presentation that we don’t have a good idea of our gasoline inventories, and because of Hurricane Ike we were just beginning a gasoline crisis that could bring the entire country to a halt. He spun quite a frightening tale, and I could see the shock on some people’s faces.
Contrary to Matt’s argument, the evidence was just the opposite. Even as he was speaking, refineries were coming back online from the hurricane outages and inventories were recovering. I caught up with Simmons later and told him that I used to work in a group in a refinery that provided inventory data to the Department of Energy, and we do indeed have very good data on gasoline inventories. So his fundamental premise was wrong. I was asked about Matt’s comments on a later panel session, and I said that gasoline inventories were beginning to recover and that I predicted they would be higher in a month. They were. Matt’s frightening scenario based on Hurricane Ike didn’t…
