Concerns about lifestyle, inappropriate comments, and unsuitable photos and videos.”Everything is indexed and able to be searched,” says Miriam Salpeter, an Atlanta-based job search and social media coach. “Even Facebook, which many people consider a more private network, can easily become a trap for job seekers who post things they would not want a prospective boss to see.” View Full Image Getty Images Don’t be lulled into thinking your privacy settings are foolproof. “All it takes is one person sharing information you might not want shared, forwarding a post, or otherwise breaching a trust for the illusion of privacy in a closed network to be eliminated,” says Ms. Salpeter, who recommends not posting anything illegal (even if it’s a joke), criticism of a boss, coworker or client, information about an interviewer, or anything sexual or discriminatory. “Assume your future boss is reading everything you…

Report: Some mentally ill detainees deported were US citizen

Thousands of mentally disabled immigrants are entangled in deportation proceedings each year with little or no legal help, leaving them distraught, defenseless and detained as their fates are decided. Their plight is detailed in a report issued Sunday by Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union.

…for example, saying they wanted to be deported to New York.”Someone who doesn’t know their own name or what country they’re from is going through some of the most complicated legal proceedings in the United States with no right to assistance, even when everyone in the courtroom knows they need it,” Mehta said. The federal agencies involved in the deportation system are well aware of many of the problems cited in the report, and Mehta said she has been cautiously encouraged by some recent steps to better handle people with mental disabilities. For example, the Justice Department’s Executive Office of Immigration Review expanded its guidebook for immigration judges this year to include a section on mental health issues, is producing a training video covering similar ground, and recently created a new post of “assistant chief immigration judge for vulnerable populations.”U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency which arrests and detains people facing deportation, will host a national forum in…

The Science Behind "Having a Bad Day" (and How to Solve It)

Here’s the thing… there is absolutely no such thing as a bad day in reality. A bad day only exists in our interpretation of reality, which then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

…if there is any science behind why a bad day occurs, Peter J. Bentley, PhD, writer of Why Sh*t Happens: The Science of a Really Bad Day, responded:

Yes, and it’s our fault, I’m afraid! The statistics show that people who believe in bad luck will have more accidents on Friday the 13th. Those who have a negative attitude are more likely to endow normal little mishaps with some mystical significance. Some psychologists even suggest that it’s a way of subconsciously avoiding responsibility for our actions. “It was Friday 13th, so I was bound to stick my fingers with superglue” or “Accidents happen in threes, so after the first mishap the next two were inevitable.” Of course it’s nonsense.

So there you have it, we have the ability to make a bad day exist if we believe it to exist.
Disclaimer: I have not yet read the book mentioned above, and only came across it when doing research for this essay. I have added it to my queue and look forward to posting an update once I’ve read it. If you’ve read this book and…

5 Things Starbucks Employees Want You to Know

The basics of cafe etiquette, from the barista’s point of view.

…I’ve worked in coffee shops several years working my way through college. I even spent a brief stint working in one during my underemployed early recession days. So I can without reservation say that serving coffee is the easiest job and best payed service industry job available without a college degree. It’s also the one that complains the most. Most coffee chains have automatic espresso machines that require no more skill than pressing a button. Tips? no way. You mostly just stand there and push a button. If you operate a real espresso machine that requires blood flow to your brain, and can make a drinkable beverage, then maybe you deserve a tip. Many people are suffering worse than you right now. Stop whining….

Tribute to Escher — 360° panoramic photography

By Nico Roig from http://www.boingboing.net/2010/07/21/mc-escher-panorama.html …

…History and Overview
Barcelona began more than 2,500 years when Phoenicians and Carthagians settled here and began a commercial port. Its name refers to the Carthagian ruler Amilcar Barca. The original name of the city was Barcino, which was adopted by the Romans in the 1st century BC and later became Barcelona. It’s now the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia.
There are several surviving monuments from the earliest Roman outposts, such as the Placa Sant Juame. Roman walls built to repel Frankish and German invasions later were used as foundations for buildings in the Gothic Quarter and in some cases can still be seen.
Barcelona sits on the Mediterranean Sea along a route that brought them lots of visitors in the ancient times — for better or worse. Circa 415AD Visigoth invaders arrived after the disintegration of the Roman Empire and called it “Barcinona”. Three centuries later the Moors swept through on their way from Northern Africa to southern France. Another century later Louis the Pious came…

What’s a Little Marriage Fraud Between Amigos?

It’s a felony, sure, but in the absence of real immigration reform, some young, assimilated illegal immigrants see it as their best path to citizenship.

…he, a suit bought off the rack at Men s Wearhouse, his first. Juana s friend snapped photographs throughout the night at one point, Juan stood up to propose a toast so the friend could take the shot, but he merely posed for the camera, mouth open, and said nothing. Everyone laughed, as the disposable camera flashed and whirred onto the next frame.
The following day, the group drove to the Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana, wearing the same clothes from the faux banquet. They posed for pictures at the western entrance of the historic building, on the steps near the marriage license office. In pairs, just the guys, just the girls, just the couple, everyone together. Juan even pulled off the garter belt from Juana s thigh for a photo the first time he ever placed his hands within a foot of her nether regions. Friends developed the photos at CVS Pharmacy, the better to play the part of poor kids in love.
A week later, Juan and Juana sat down for an interview with an officer in the Santa Ana offices of…

10 Things We Love About Weird Al’s UHF

UHF is frickin’ hilarious. Here are ten amazing things about the film.

…he’s out to kick some butt.” Fun fact: The guy who played Gandhi was also the director.

6. Trinidad Silva, 1950-1988
Finding out that the actor who played Raul Hernandez, host of Raul’s Wild Kingdom, actually died while filming the movie doesn’t make his character any less hysterical. From “Today we are teaching poodles how to fly,” to “Turtles are nature’s suction cup,” to “We don’t need no stinking badgers!” Raul is the most quotable character in the film, thanks to Silva’s passionate delivery.

5. Conan the Librarian
A cheap pun, but worth it just for the visual of Schwarzenegger stand-in Roger Callard, in full Conan regalia, in a library, Ah-nulding the line “Don’t you know the Dewey decimal system?”

4. Emo Philips Cutting Off His Own Thumb
I just like Emo Philips. He’s not in enough movies.

3. The Teaming Up of Fran Drescher and Billy Barty
