Apology after girl’s lemonade stand shut down

A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.

…PORTLAND, Ore. A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.
Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen, the county’s top elected official, said Thursday that running a lemonade stand is a “classic iconic American kid thing to do.”
He says he called Julie Murphy’s mother, Maria Fife, to offer his apology and says she appreciated it.
Fife helped her daughter set up a lemonade stand last week at a local arts fair in northeast Portland. They had to pack up and leave after being approached by two inspectors who said the stand lacked a license.
Cogen says while the inspectors were doing their job, the rules are meant for professional food service operators. He adds he ran lemonade stands as a child….

Gum Disease May be Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease

Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.

…NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) — Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.
Study leader Dr. Angela Kamer and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis involving 20 years of data that supports a possible causal link between periodontal disease, or gum inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease, which involves brain inflammation.
“The research suggests that cognitively normal subjects with periodontal inflammation are at an increased risk of lower cognitive function compared to cognitively normal subjects with little or no periodontal inflammation,” Kamer said in a statement.
Kamer’s team then compared cognitive function at ages 50 and 70, using the Digit Symbol Test, a part of the standard measurement of adult IQ.
The researchers did an analysis of periodontal inflammation and cognitive function in 152 subjects in the Glistered Aging Study, involving Danish men and women over a 20-year period ending in 1984, when the…

Facebook says ad spending is rocketing

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.

…yahoobuzz

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s most prominent liaison to Madison Avenue, said in an interview with BusinessWeek published Wednesday that the company’s biggest advertisers have boosted their spending on Facebook by tenfold, or even 20-fold, in the past year.
“Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us,” Sandberg told BusinessWeek. “They started buying with us a year ago. Now, they’re going big.”
Not that long ago, the common wisdom was that advertising on a social network simply wouldn’t translate into profits, a position held by figures as high-up as Google’s chief financial officer. His rationale was that people use social networks for communication and connection with friends, not for researching potential future buying decisions the way they would with a search engine….

You’ve seen him singing to the 16-year-old wunderkind, now you get to marvel in the glory of Shaq learning a dance routine from Biebdawg. Why? I don’t know, but it really happened.

…If there are two things in the entire world that Shaquille O’Neal(notes) loves more than anything else, they are:1) Dancing2) Being famousSomewhere further down that list is playing basketball, but in the summer that definitely takes a back seat to chillin’, loungin’ and cuttin’ up. However, there is another activity that Shaq enjoys, and it’s rapidly rising up his list of favorite things hanging out with Justin Bieber. You’ve seen him singing to the 16-year-old wunderkind, now you get to marvel in the glory of Shaq learning a dance routine from Biebdawg. Shaq’s already earned his stripes as a premium rug-cutter, so adding him to the team is a…

Reading scores way down? Parents blame the test, not the kid

Parents across Brownstone Brooklyn are slamming the Department of Education’s just-released state reading test scores which show that more than half of fifth-graders can’t read at grade level — a much-higher failure rate than last year’s test.

…City officials are cautioning parents to pay no attention to this year s numbers the test was significantly harder to pass than last year s, which was seen as so easy that it was not a reliable indicator of student achievement. But parents aren t buying it. They raised the standards and everyone s scores went down, so what does that tell you? said Laurie Windsor, president of the Community Education Council in neighboring Bay Ridge. A lot of people are questioning this and wondering how valid the scores are. It s ridiculous. Students did so well on last year s easy exams that 84 percent of city schools earned an A on their annual school report cards. A comparable stat for this year will be released in October. The sudden crash in the number of students reading at or above grade level had some parents questioning the Department of Education s reliance on testing as a way of judging student performance. I don t know if you can judge how well a kid is doing by one exam, said Mario Aguila, a member of the…
