Apology after girl’s lemonade stand shut down

A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.

…PORTLAND, Ore. A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.
Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen, the county’s top elected official, said Thursday that running a lemonade stand is a “classic iconic American kid thing to do.”
He says he called Julie Murphy’s mother, Maria Fife, to offer his apology and says she appreciated it.
Fife helped her daughter set up a lemonade stand last week at a local arts fair in northeast Portland. They had to pack up and leave after being approached by two inspectors who said the stand lacked a license.
Cogen says while the inspectors were doing their job, the rules are meant for professional food service operators. He adds he ran lemonade stands as a child….

Better Film Decade: 1980s or 2000s?

Axel, E.T. and Indy (no, not the one who hides from nuclear blasts in refrigerators) vs. Aragorn, Gaylord and Jake Sulley.

…Ledger edges Nicholson (not in cool though) Keaton and Bale are a wash to me, and TDK has the far superior script. That was tough to say. I beat a kid up on the bus over the Batman VHS back in 90, and I owned it for 25 hours before his brother got to me the next day and body slammed me Ultimate Warrior style in front of the entire 5th grade. I gave the tape back. That was my dedication. I gave and took ass whippings for Burton’s Batman….

Net neutrality is foremost free speech issue of our time

If we learned that the government was planning to limit our First Amendment rights, we’d be outraged. After all, our right to be heard is fundamental to our democracy.

…all have a stake in preserving First AmendmentEditor’s note: Sen. Al Franken was elected to the Senate as a member of the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) Party from Minnesota. He was sworn in July 2009 after a statewide hand recount. Before he joined the Senate, he spent 37 years as a comedy writer, author and radio talk show host. (CNN) — If we learned that the government was planning to limit our First Amendment rights, we’d be outraged. After all, our right to be heard is fundamental to our democracy. Well, our free speech rights are under assault — not from the government but from corporations seeking to control the flow of information in America. If that scares you as much as it scares me, then you need to care about net neutrality. “Net neutrality” sounds arcane, but it’s fundamental to free speech. The internet today is an open marketplace. If you have a product, you can sell it. If you have an opinion, you can blog about it. If you have an idea, you can share it with the world. And no matter who you…

…Source: sxc.hu Photo: ctoocheckOne of the things that can eat into your retirement funds is taxes. No matter where you live in the U.S., you will have to pay federal taxes. However, state income and sales taxes are a completely different matter. Mexico: President Considers Debate on Legalizing Drugs

President Felipe Calderon said he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs as his government announced that more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he launched a crackdown against cartels in 2006.

…MEXICO CITY President Felipe Calderon said he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs Tuesday as his government announced that more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he launched a crackdown against cartels in 2006.
Intelligence agency director Guillermo Valdes also said authorities have confiscated about 84,000 weapons and made total cash seizures of $411 million in U.S. currency and $26 million worth in pesos (330 million pesos).
Valdes released the statistics during a meeting with Calderon and representatives of business and civic groups, where attendees exploring ways to improve Mexico’s anti-drug strategy called on the government to open a debate on legalization.
Calderon said he has taken note of the idea of legally regulating drugs in the past.
“It’s a fundamental debate in which I think, first of all, you must allow a democratic plurality (of opinions),” he said. “You have to analyze carefully the pros and cons and the key arguments on both sides.”
Three former…
