The cultivation of livestock such as cows, pigs and sheep accounts for two-thirds of the world’s farmland and generates 20 percent of all greenhouse gases, reports The Guardian.
“There is a meat crisis,” van Huis told the Guardian. “The world population will grow from six billion now to nine billion by 2050 and we know people are consuming more meat. Twenty years ago the average was 20kg, it is now 50kg, and will be 80kg in 20 years. If we continue like this we will need another Earth.”
The climate killer in a meat diet is methane.
Emitted mostly by cows yes, that s via burps and farts the gas is 23 times more harmful for the ozone layer than carbon dioxide.
But a world with less methane isn’t the only value of an insect diet.
According to the Guardian:
The insects also produce 300 times less nitrous oxide, also a warming gas, and much less ammonia, a pollutant produced by pig and poultry…

…Chang’s unique design gives his apartment a spacious feel, at least by Hong Kong standards — the city of more than 7 million is among the most densely populated in the world, and the average apartment size is just 56 square meters (600 square feet). Chang understands well the overcrowded conditions that prevail in this city. The 47-year-old grew up in this apartment, sharing it with six others — his parents, three younger sisters and a tenant. In those days, it was divided into three bedrooms and Chang slept in the living room, little more than a corridor. “We had to learn the art of living close together,” Chang recalls. “One thing I remember is we spoke quietly.” As the urban population grows worldwide, interest in Chang’s apartment has gone global. (CNN) — A 14-year-old Dutch girl set sail Wednesday morning on a journey to travel around the world. Laura Dekker left her home port of Den Osse at 9:10 a.m., her spokesman Peter de Lange confirmed. “She will arrive in Portugal, near Lisbon, in two or three weeks,” de Lange said. “She is traveling in her yacht, Guppy, with her father until Lisbon where she will start the official solo sailing trip around the world.” Dekker’s attempt to circle the globe hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Last August, Dutch authorities placed Dekker under state care for two months after her parents refused to prevent her from undertaking the potentially dangerous voyage. Last October, a Dutch court ruled against letting Dekker sail solo around the world, saying she is not experienced enough to make the trip on her own. However, she would be allowed to travel this year if she fulfilled certain requirements the court established for her to sail. Prosecutors across the U.S. are making the dubious claim that videotaping the police in action violates wiretap laws. But that’s a stretch, to put it mildly

…Law enforcement is fighting back. In the case of Graber a young husband and father who had never been arrested the police searched his residence and seized computers. Graber spent 26 hours in jail even before facing the wiretapping charges that could conceivably put him away for 16 years. (It is hard to believe he will actually get anything like that, however. One point on his side: the Maryland attorney general’s office recently gave its opinion that a court would likely find that the wiretap law does not apply to traffic stops.)…

For four days straight in mid-June, Kyrgyz mobs attacked the Uzbek community in the city of Osh, looting and burning entire Uzbek neighborhoods.

…Then at 5:45 on the morning of July 8, four police cars pulled up to the Talipovs’ home and 20 men in uniforms piled out, some wearing masks, all carrying Kalashnikovs. They barged in, fired a warning shot into the ceiling, and ransacked the house. Somewhere in the kitchen they found 11 bullets, which the Talipovs say were planted, and arrested the four men in the house. Throughout the rest of that day, at the Interregional Directorate, a feared police bureau known as the MRU, all of the men were brutally beaten. “They wanted me to confess to murder and rape during the June events, but I showed them documents proving that I was in Bishkek at the time of the riots,” says Babur Talipov, 28. By morning, the Talipov men had made a deal to secure their release in exchange for $1,500. Three of them walked free. But the eldest brother, Alisher, remains in an isolation cell. He has agreed, his relatives say, to falsely confess to the murder of Kyrgyz. (See pictures of ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan.)…

(CNN) — In protest of what it calls a religion “of the devil,” a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an “International Burn a Quran Day” on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it’s causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times,” Pastor Terry Jones told CNN’s Rick Sanchez earlier this week. Jones wrote a book titled “Islam is of the Devil,” and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.
