Eleven Great Playable Video Game Satires

They’re games, but they’re also parodies of games. Sweet!

…better than creator Ian Bogost himself: “You get a cow. You can click on it. In six hours, you can click it again. Clicking earns you clicks. You can buy custom ‘premium’ cows through micropayments (the Cow Clicker currency is called ‘mooney’), and you can buy your way out of the time delay by spending it. You can publish feed stories about clicking your cow, and you can click friends’ cow clicks in their feed stories. Cow Clicker is Facebook games distilled to their essence.” Plus you don’t even need Flash…

Will Portal 2 Scare Off Casual Gamers?

It came as no surprise that something as good as Portal appealed not only to a hardcore audience, but also casual gamers. The wait for Portal 2 is getting shorter, but as more information is revealed one thing keeps coming up: is Portal 2 going to be too hard? Will it scare off the casual fans Portal was able to pick up?

…When I initial heard about the Orange Box I thought Portal sounded like another tedious puzzle game. I lothe puzzle games. But I recently bought Orange Box for $18 used, and thought, what the hey I will try it out. I love the game. Finished the advanced maps and am still trying to capture gold in a few of the stages. It is a great game. With all that in mind though, I would have rather seen Valve put out another Orange Box, with multiple games again, that have a stand alone Portal game. The time it takes to get thru all the maps in Portal is just about perfect, and if you want to do more you can. If a full game of Portal is longer I think it would border on the repetitive, but it if is only as long as the first one, then I do not think people will be happy paying full game price for it….

Better Film Decade: 1980s or 2000s?

Axel, E.T. and Indy (no, not the one who hides from nuclear blasts in refrigerators) vs. Aragorn, Gaylord and Jake Sulley.

…Ledger edges Nicholson (not in cool though) Keaton and Bale are a wash to me, and TDK has the far superior script. That was tough to say. I beat a kid up on the bus over the Batman VHS back in 90, and I owned it for 25 hours before his brother got to me the next day and body slammed me Ultimate Warrior style in front of the entire 5th grade. I gave the tape back. That was my dedication. I gave and took ass whippings for Burton’s Batman….

Border Patrol Agent Let Illegals In the US For Sexual Favors

Rudy Trace Soliz III, a former Customs and Border Protection, pleaded guilty to alien smuggling and bribery, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced today. He did it “in return for sexual favors with the co-conspirator,” the feds say

…This hot desire converts to cold disdain.” (Hey, we’re nothing but classy here.)The female co-conspirator has already pleaded guilty to possession of more than five kilos of cocaine with intent to distribute. She had yet to be sentenced, so we guess Soliz figured she wouldn’t exactly keep his secret when she got on the stand. The transporting of illegal aliens conviction carries a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment, while the bribery conviction is punishable by a maximum 15-year-term of imprisonment, the U.S. Attorney’s office says. Each count of conviction is also punishable with fines of up to $250,000….

Obama’s Growing Unpopularity In The Muslim World

A new Brookings poll reveals the harmful effects of our foreign policy, including toward Israel.

…But a consensus had arisen in the Foreign Policy Community — and it was certainly a major plank in the Obama campaign — that multiple U.S. interests (beginning with our ability to deter Terrorism) would be served by improving how the U.S. is viewed in the Muslim and Arab world….

4 Pilots That Are Being Re-Shot Before Their Fall Premieres

With less than two months until fall premiere season begins, several networks are reworking some of their higher profile programs in time for their autumn roll-outs.

…! My Dad Says
While CBS executive Nina Tassler had a difficult time convincing critics at this week’s TCA press tour that she was satisfied with the original pilot, which was adapted from Justin Halpern’s profanity-laced Twitter feed and stars William Shatner, she was able to convince critics that there is a chance the pilot could turn out well after it is reshot with new lead Jonathan Sadowski. Look at Big Bang Theory and Numb3rs, Tassler reasoned. Those both needed to be reshot and look how they turned out. So think of this like the Big Bang Theory…

Gum Disease May be Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease

Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.

…NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) — Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.
Study leader Dr. Angela Kamer and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis involving 20 years of data that supports a possible causal link between periodontal disease, or gum inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease, which involves brain inflammation.
“The research suggests that cognitively normal subjects with periodontal inflammation are at an increased risk of lower cognitive function compared to cognitively normal subjects with little or no periodontal inflammation,” Kamer said in a statement.
Kamer’s team then compared cognitive function at ages 50 and 70, using the Digit Symbol Test, a part of the standard measurement of adult IQ.
The researchers did an analysis of periodontal inflammation and cognitive function in 152 subjects in the Glistered Aging Study, involving Danish men and women over a 20-year period ending in 1984, when the…

5 Musicians Who Should Really be President

We decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for.

…Yesterday, CNN reported that Wyclef Jean has entered himself into the bid for president in Haiti. This doesn’t mark the first time a celebrity has run for office, and while we wish him the best of luck, we have to wonder what qualifications he has other than being a member of the seminal ’90s group the Fugees.

Since this isn’t an election we can actually participate in, we decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for. See our picks after the jump….

How Long Will You Wait in Line at a Restaurant?

Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road.

…I’ve never walked into the Cheesecake Factory at dinner time and been able to sit down immediately. And I’ve abandoned a summer night trip to Glace because the line stretched out the door and down Main Street. The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza hilariously covered how long one should wait to be served. What about when you’re just trying to get inside a restaurant?
Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road. When I’m walking, I want drivers to be considerate and let me go if it’s raining, even if they have the right of way or I’m clearly jaywalking. I feel the same way about lines. If I beat the rush at Bo Lings’ dim sum and find myself seated as the wait approaches close to 45 minutes, I feel like I have won. And if I’m stuck at the Bonefish Grill’s bar, nailing down Bang Bang Shrimp, I can’t help glaring at the couple lingering over dessert. Serious Eats considered the issue of long…

Taco Bell Removes the "Truck" from "Food Truck"

Taking note of the success of mobile vendors across the country, Taco Bell just announced that it is rolling out several items inspired by Mexican street food. The chain is calling them Cantina Tacos and selling them at street-food prices, $1.49 a taco.

…xvx175 says:
Joe, your comment was funny in a “truthy” sort of way. But you got both facts wrong (impressive for a one sentence comment).

First, Taco Bell didn’t invent the hard shell taco. Hard shell tacos were around at least 12 years before Taco Bell opened its first store. Second, Taco Bell has offered soft tacos for at least 20 years. I remember eating them in the early 1990s.

Denveater, regarding price, it’s sort of mid-range. There are cheaper items, like the plain old hard taco on what used to be the “value menu”. But once you step up from there, prices range $1.60 to $2.70 per item.

As the anonymous coward wrote, it’s still cheaper than tacos from local food trucks, but not as cheap as what you’d get on the street in Mexico. That seems to be about right for the market they’re trying to hit with this product. I’m definitely going to have to try them out!

Finally, a good taco doesn’t need anything more than onions, cilantro, and lime. The real trick will be to see how they do with corn…
