The recovery disc rip-off

PC manufacturers are cutting corners on recovery discs and profiting when things go wrong, discovers Stewart Mitchell.

…Wow, how overpriced this is!!!
Perhaps i know a bit more than a general user, so i do backup my system once a week, and i do have an OS recovery disk, which i just downloaded from microsofts website (or shall i say from digital river which are available free to download from here http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/11/10/windows-7
-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download-links-ul
timate-professional-and-home-premium/) i Think i agree with the guy who said that we pay for the licence, which is printed on the PC or Laptop, but indeed before, i got a copy of Vista for my dell system that was in 2008, so not that long ago. But i also agree that the companies use the advantage that they know that most people would not do anything because they…

iPhone 4 Fans Face Abuse On Worldwide Release

While the iPhone geeks were waiting patiently in line, there was a notable undercurrent of anger among some of the onlookers. Cries such as “get a life” and “it’s only a phone” were heard regularly among much more aggressive one-liners.

…Releases in other countries seemed to go by without so much shouting, with Canada being one other major centre that now also has access to the iPhone 4.While not all existing iPhone owners are ready to snap up the new model, and lots of people seem to be already waiting for the next release, it seems more than a few people are a little confused regarding the seemingly small commercial implications of what it a pretty major design flaw.See also Apple rumour of new iPhone and Verizon phone iPhone 4 and the ‘Grip of Death’ The latest on the iPhone signal problems Geek With Laptop Weekly Roundup 05.03.2010Previously: Smartphones Tempting for Computer HackersNext: Hacker Demonstrates Powerful Mobile Interception at Minimal ExpenseIf you want to find out all the latest news on tech why not subscribe to our RSS feed? One comment so far FedericoAugust 1, 2010 at 8:38 amPayola is as payola does.Leave a Reply Name (required) Mail (will not be published) (required) Website Notify me of follow up comments via e-mail…

Another Lawsuit Filed Over School Webcam Spying

Another lawsuit has been filed against a Pennsylvania school district over allegations that officials installed software on school-issued laptops that secretly took webcam photographs and screen shots of students.

…”The district also promised never to look at or review a student’s laptop files unless:” … “there is ‘reasonable suspicion’ that the student is violating law”Aren’t people innocent until proven guilty in the U.S. by law? You can’t just monitor someone’s activities “in case” they violate the law. That’s illegal for law enforcement. OHHH WAIT they’re school officials not law enforcement officials. What law grants school officials the job of law enforcement officers and the job to run investigations? This is just messed up from any angle you look at it. The school is almost certainly breaking some laws. The school needs to review their policies about these webcams and when to take pictures (if at all)….

Why is the Xbox 360 Still Outselling PS3 in North America?

Sony has had a tremendous year with its Playstation 3 console. But despite all of the great headlines, why do sales of the PS3 continue to lag behind Microsoft’s?

…Wow Joe… any more spin?

The PS3 has by far more AAA exclusives. Threefold as many as the 360… stop living in a dream world. I’m not even counting the fact that half of the 360 games have a better version on PC, and aren’t really exclusive. When you consider that, the number is rather pathetic.

COD exclusive content is not a big deal, because you are brainwashed once again, you microdrone. It’s timed exclusive, in other words, it’s not exclusive and is being marketed as such. PS3 will get it eventually. Unlike every other game where exclusive content will be on PS3 only FOREVER. Dead Space 2, Assassin’s Creed, Medal of Honor, Mafia 2… you get the picture.

And the XMB is a million times better than that crappy wii-ripoff operating system. Give your head a shake. The XMB currently has the most awards ever won by a console user interface. Research next time, moron.

And the PS3 makes the 360 look like a last generation system altogether. You guys are happy to finally be getting WiFi… well the PS3 has…

Robocop Ran DOS… and other movie code decoded

Virtually no sci-fi or action flick these days is complete without a computer scene showing a few screens of mysterious scrolling text and a 3D wire-frame model. But where does this vaguely tech-looking stuff come from? Well, more often than not, it comes from a Website, app, or startup screen from the real world at the time the movie was made

California considers digital ads on car license plates

Apparently fed up with drivers devoting way too much of their attention to driving, the California Legislature has approved a detailed study of a proposal that could transform license plates on the state’s 30 million-plus automobiles into miniature billboards.

…a few questions spring to mind:
Who would decide what messages are appropriate and inappropriate? (I nominate the same people who make those calls for Apple’s apps store.)
How long before voluntary becomes mandatory?
And who’s going to break that news to the Privacy Police?
As for reaction to the mere idea, here’s a sample:
From a reader of the San Francisco Chronicle:
Forget license plates, they’re too small. Let’s just make the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges giant advertisements instead. They’re big, visible for miles, and large enough lettering will be easy to read everywhere. Better yet, let’s paint all the sidewalks in downtown SF and Oakland with advertisements as well, and start skinning the buildings with ads like Tokyo and in Blade Runner.
A Slashdotter foresees possible trouble for law enforcement:
Policeman to bystander. “So, the bank robbers were driving a black sedan and you aren’t sure of the make or year because all cars look alike nowadays? I don’t suppose you got the license number?”
Bystander….

How I washed my G15
Submitted by Fecal Face on Fri, 05/28/2010 - 2:19pm
Few months ago I spilled root beer on my G15. Nearly shat a brick. It was in need of a good cleaning anyways, so:
I popped off the back, and just took the front “panel” part with me, the front part with all the keys attatched to it (and the LCD). I popped out ALL the keys, and put them in a bowl of warm water.
I ran a SMALL amount of water over the “panel” (I don’t really know what it’s called?) I was left with, the one all the keys were attatched to. Avoided the LCD, obviously.
Scrubbed the stuff out from the “panel” with a toothbrush and warm water. You would not BELIEVE the shit that was coming off, it took me a good 20 minutes to scrub all the gunk out.
When I was done scrubbing, I dried it with a blow dryer (temp. set to “cool”, was afraid of melting it or something..).
Dried all the keys with a paper towel / blow drying. Also took a while.
Popped all the keys back in, and now it’s nice and…

Who Needs a MacBook… (pics)

…. .Of course, this guy’s portable is a bit cumbersome. But remember the original — the early — portables? (We didn’t exactly either, but we did a little research). As great as they were, for their time, they weren’t so fly-weight as their names (or our memories) served. They were cool though. Here, for those curious, are just a few fun examples:. The First Portable Computer(source) The Osbourne I. There’s some question as to which portable computer was the actual first but this one, pioneered by Adam Osborne, was among the early ones and was apparently the first (somewhat) mass marketed portable. It checked in at a healthy…
