Where is the Future?

…It’s almost certain that the future will not have dog bark translators, rocket packs for everyone (dangerous idea), time travel (please!) and AI that takes over the universe and annihilates all carbon units (we will always be their masters). No need to despair though, because the future will be better. Much better.

Imagine vehicles that that can move silently at tremendous speeds without any visible means of propulsion and that can negotiate right angle turns without slowing down and without incurring any damage due to inertial effects. Imagine traveling from New York to Beijing in minutes, or earth to Mars in hours. Imagine floating above the rings of Saturn or the craters on Jupiter’s moon, Iapetus. Imagine unlimited clean energy for everybody and their pets and legions of robotic servants zipping around the earth and the solar system, tending to our every need and whim. Well, it will all happen in your lifetime and here is why.

iPod Causes 17 Accidents a Day in the UK

Apple’s iPod has been singled out as the reason for more than 17 accidents per day in the UK. The situation has been dubbed “iPod Oblivion”: people so “into” what’s playing on their iPod that they ignore the world around them, necessarily leading to accidents.

…Ipods, cell phones, radios, air conditioners, the person sitting next to you, the dog in the back seat, the neon sign you are driving by. There are tons of distractions out there, it comes down to how much time you give them. Anyone who is too busy playing with their ipod deserves a low speed accident. Not only is it not safe, but its just plain stupid. Some people have no concept of when to say when. 1-2 soconds (not that I’m condoning it) is not reckless and stupid. Anything more than that though and you are just begging for it. Dont blame the machines, blame the people who cant prioritize their attention when needed….

Google to Stop Developing Wave

Google doesn’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects.

But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily liberate their content from Wave.Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. Amazing Chinese Concept envisions a Straddling Bus that cars can drive Underneath it as it does its regular rounds.

…The amazing concept will utilize the road space that is apparent between the street’s bridges and regular vehicles. This in turn will use up space that is not utilized in the first place, reduce building expenses and decrease congestion by allowing the traffic to continue regularly right underneath it.

The Straddling Bus will run regularly above normal cars and right beneath overpasses while still maintaining 40 km/h. Moreover, it has a capacity of 1200 passengers with 300 in each cart. Construction of such a project is also a great advantage, for it takes only 1 year to build 40 km, while a subway takes 3 years for the same distance. The best part is that it will not require a place to park, as regular buses do, since it can remain on the road and still allow the traffic to continue as normal.
As the Bus design presents, there are two ways for passengers to climb on this Straddling bus: by loading through the sides and also by a ladder to have passengers climb down from the overpasses and through the…

Sony and the rocket clubs worked with a group of high school students, to build rocket with a Sony VAIO laptop as its “avionics package” (i.e. the rocket’s brains).

A laptop needs to be able to handle some serious Gs (especially when the parachute deploys–the G forces greatly increase for a brief moment when the parachutes open). Most Internet time now spent with social networks, games

E-mail, once the ‘Net’s killer app, has been eclipsed by time spent on social networking and games. Only on mobile devices does e-mail retain its old dominance. Social networking now has a 22.7 percent share of the PC pie, while online games get a 10.2 percent share.

…has released its latest statistics. They show that Americans now spend almost a quarter of their PC/laptop days and nights on social networking sites and blogs. That’s a 43 percent jump from a year ago.

Meanwhile, the jury is still out on e-mail which now commands a paltry 8.3 percent of consumer time, a drop of 28 percent from June 2009.
But the media survey company notes that at the same time computer e-mail use is in decline, mobile users are ramping up the activity e-mailing now consumes 41.6 percent of all US mobile Internet time.
“Despite the almost unlimited nature of what you can do on the Web, 40 percent of US online time is spent on just three activities social networking, playing games and emailing,” noted Nielsen research analyst Dave Martin, “leaving a whole lot of other sectors fighting for a declining share of the online pie.”

Google has been crowned the ‘king of malware’ by security company Barracuda Networks, linking to twice as much malware as search rivals Bing, Yahoo and Twitter combined.

…, Google accounted for 69 percent of all malware found, with Yahoo at 18 percent, Bing (which supplies Yahoo search) at 12 percent, and Twitter on 1 percent.
Artwork: Chip TaylorAs for the trend topics that drive malware in search results, the gap between one appearing on Twitter and in search results varied from 1.2 days on Google to 4.3 days in Bing, and 4.8 days on Yahoo. This suggests that one reason for Google’s popularity in the malware stakes is simply is responsiveness in picking up on these trending subjects. Malware embedded in search simply follows this.
The other is perhaps its outright popularity. According to a recent comScore analysis, 62.6 percent of all US search traffic is on Google’s site, well ahead of yahoo’s 18.9 percent and Bing’s 12.7 percent.
Interestingly, Barracuda’s malware percentages line up almost exactly with these market share numbers, which suggests that this might be the dominant factor.
