Where is the Future?

…It’s almost certain that the future will not have dog bark translators, rocket packs for everyone (dangerous idea), time travel (please!) and AI that takes over the universe and annihilates all carbon units (we will always be their masters). No need to despair though, because the future will be better. Much better.

Quantum Networks Advance with Entanglement of Photons

A team of Harvard physicists led by Mikhail D. Lukin has achieved the first-ever quantum entanglement of photons and solid-state materials.

…Quantum networking applications such as long-distance communication and distributed computing would require the nodes that process and store quantum data in qubits to be connected to one another by entanglement, a state where two different atoms become indelibly linked such that one inherits the properties of the other.
“In quantum computing and quantum communication, a big question has been whether or how it would be possible to actually connect qubits, separated by long distances, to one another,” says Lukin, professor of physics at Harvard and co-author of a paper describing the work in this week’s issue of the journal Nature. “Demonstration of quantum entanglement between a solid-state material and photons is an important advance toward linking qubits together into a quantum network.”
Quantum entanglement has previously been demonstrated only with photons and individual ions or atoms.

BP hit with $10bn lawsuit over Texas City ‘chemical leak’

BP has been unexpectedly hit with a $10bn (£6.2bn) lawsuit related to an alleged leak of toxic chemicals at its Texas City refinery earlier this year, adding to its woes over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

…The sale lifted BP s share price by 2.55 to 415.65p, as the company made a new
attempt to kill its well permanently. Incoming BP chief executive Robert
Dudley is in Russia today for meetings with senior politicians and
industrialists in his first visit to the country since he fled in 2008. A
BP spokesman said it does not comment on litigation….

BP will this week step up its fight against an “unconstitutional” proposal to ban it from new US offshore drilling, which the British Embassy has warned could be seen as protectionism.

…One source close to BP said the company was preparing to accelerate lobbying
against the proposed bill, arguing
that it is “punitive towards a single company” and “unconstitutional”.

The British Embassy in Washington has made its objections known to both the
White House and members of Congress….

There are some awesome innovations in light bulbs, and making changes to the way you light your house can have a powerful impact on your energy bills and the environment.

LEDs are awesome, and their prices are dropping, though right now CFLs and other fluorescents are a better buy for most homeowners who don’t have super-heavy lighting needs. Yes these bulbs have some mercury in them, but that is dropping, and there are precautions you can take, and do be sure to dispose of them properly. However, also don’t panic. There is much more mercury in other common products (thermostats, thermometers, electronics, switches), and I interviewed experts in the book who calculated that you’d receive more exposure from eating a seafood meal than is likely from a broken CFL.

Mysterious Newspaper Creatures Appear All Over Tucson

Nick Georgiou’s puts his recycled newspaper sculptures on the street before photographing people’s reactions to them. My reaction would be WTF at first but definitely one of the coolest artworks I’ve seen.

…s oldest paper. In fact, the sculpture itself is one of several that were made out of copies of the final issue, constructed within hours of the paper hitting the newsstands, so that the two could be photographed together.

Building each of the sculptures is a painstaking process. It starts with the paper being torn into strips, or rolled into tubes, before then being hand stitched into its new form.

While the basic shape can be worked up relatively quickly, the artist says the most important thing about them is that their expressions and postures appear animated, which can take anywhere from several hours to months of work to achieve.
