Mexico: President Considers Debate on Legalizing Drugs

President Felipe Calderon said he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs as his government announced that more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he launched a crackdown against cartels in 2006.
…MEXICO CITY President Felipe Calderon said he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs Tuesday as his government announced that more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he launched a crackdown against cartels in 2006.
Intelligence agency director Guillermo Valdes also said authorities have confiscated about 84,000 weapons and made total cash seizures of $411 million in U.S. currency and $26 million worth in pesos (330 million pesos).
Valdes released the statistics during a meeting with Calderon and representatives of business and civic groups, where attendees exploring ways to improve Mexico’s anti-drug strategy called on the government to open a debate on legalization.
Calderon said he has taken note of the idea of legally regulating drugs in the past.
“It’s a fundamental debate in which I think, first of all, you must allow a democratic plurality (of opinions),” he said. “You have to analyze carefully the pros and cons and the key arguments on both sides.”

How BP’s Static Kill Operation Plugged Oil Well? (pic)

…The static kill is the latest attempt to shut down the blown-out well, which began gushing oil into the Gulf of Mexico after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and sank April 20, killing 11 people. The well spewed oil for nearly three months as BP made several attempts at reducing or stanching the flow. The well was finally capped and oil flow stopped on July 15.
Mud is being fed from a ship called the Blue Dolphin to the Q4000 platform. The Q4000 is then pumping the heavy mud, about 13.2 pounds per gallon, into the choke line of the well’s original blowout preventer. The mud is being pumped at low pressure and rates of speed.
About 28,000 barrels of mud are on standby but BP expects the process to use only about 2,000 barrels….

Parents across Brownstone Brooklyn are slamming the Department of Education’s just-released state reading test scores which show that more than half of fifth-graders can’t read at grade level — a much-higher failure rate than last year’s test.
…City officials are cautioning parents to pay no attention to this year s numbers the test was significantly harder to pass than last year s, which was seen as so easy that it was not a reliable indicator of student achievement.But parents aren t buying it. They raised the standards and everyone s scores went down, so what does that tell you? said Laurie Windsor, president of the Community Education Council in neighboring Bay Ridge. A lot of people are questioning this and wondering how valid the scores are. It s ridiculous. Students did so well on last year s easy exams that 84 percent of city schools earned an A on their annual school report cards. A comparable stat for this year will be released in October.The sudden crash in the number of students reading at or above grade level had some parents questioning the Department of Education s reliance on testing as a way of judging student performance. Google to Stop Developing Wave

Google doesn’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects.

But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily liberate their content from Wave.Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. A former Upper St. Clair High School student who already claimed she had been raped once was raped again on school property after school officials used her as bait in a failed attempt to catch students they believed were having sex in the building, her attorneys claim.
…The allegation was made in a lengthy response filed by attorneys for the unidentified former student against the district’s motion to throw out the lawsuit brought by the former student. Upper St. Clair school district is asking U.S. District Chief Judge Gary L. Her last two kids were taken away from her. But that didn’t stop Brittainy Labberton from getting pregnant again.

What the county fears is a repeat of Labberton’s first two attempts at motherhood. Following the birth of her second child in August of 2008, Labberton says she became depressed and suicidal, yet refused to take medication.The 5′5”, 90-pound woman feared getting fat. And seemed to project those fears onto her kids, who, as everyone knows, are supposed to be a little chubby.
Labberton’s younger daughter was first taken from her custody after she only gained one pound in her first two months of life. Then, after a supervised visit in which she told the foster parents her kid looked fat, the baby got diarrhea. Tests later revealed that Labberton had fed the child laxatives.
Labberton’s older daughter, then two, was also taken from her care. Her foster parents say that when they first brought her home, she ate so fast she choked.
There’s good reason to believe this pattern is repeating itself now, as Labberton has already been hospitalized once during her latest pregnancy for not…
