Get Several Dozen Women Pregnant

Canadian lawyer and investor Charles Vance Millar was renowned for his love of practical jokes, his affable nature, his intelligence and his ruthless business acumen: He set up his own law office and eventually used the profits to purchase the British Columbia Express Company, which provided most of the transport to settlers in the region. He had an uncanny knack for picking the right investment, and over a period of 10 years, his net worth rose from $100,000 to $750,000 (that was a lot back in 1897).

That could buy you many monocles.
In his later years, Millar really made a name for himself when his actions changed the lives of some lucky locals forever: He started a competition with the end-goal of taking people from their dreary normal lives and propelling them into the limelight, kind of like a turn-of-the-century American Idol. Only instead of singing, it was humping, and instead of Simon Cowell, it was presided over by a corpse.
Have fun with that mental…

Motel Argument Turns Ugly, Via Snake

The “Weapon”
A four-foot python.
When you have a serious phobia, it’s generally not a good idea to go around telling people about it. Well, not obnoxious strangers you meet in motels, anyway.

“Well, Mr. Bates, I’d say the two things I fear the most are taxidermists and being killed in the shower.”
Jeffery “I don’t do snakes” Culp learned this the hard way when he checked into a motel with his wife whilst looking for a new home. A few days into their stay, Jeffery noticed fellow motel-dweller Tony Smith “running up and down the sidewalk” with his pet python. Not knowing well enough to walk away from the “running snake man,” Jeffery made a point of telling Smith that he was “deathly afraid” of snakes. Needless to say, he’d live to regret this.

“CCCOOOOBBBRRRAAA!”
A while later, Jeffery complained Tony and his cronies were playing music way too loudly. He went to Smith’s room to give them a piece of his mind, only to find them “racing down the hallway in chairs.”…

Heroic Afghan Dog Reunited with U.S. Soldier

When Chris Duke was serving in Afghanistan, he befriended stray dogs Sasha, Target and Rufus. One night, a suicide bomber tried to get into Duke’s barracks. But the dogs began barking and biting him. The attacker blew himself up before he could kill 50 soldiers inside.

…When Georgia National Guardsman Chris Duke was serving in Afghanistan, he made friends with the locals - stray dogs Sasha, Target and Rufus.

“A lot of us used the three of them as an escape when you’re homesick,” Duke said.
But, as CBS News national correspondent Jeff Glor reports, the dogs did much more than keep him company.

“I firmly believe I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for him,” Duke said.
On a February night, a suicide bomber tried to get into Duke’s barracks. But the dogs began barking and biting the intruder. The attacker blew himself up before he could kill 50 soldiers inside.

Sasha was severely injured and had to be put down. But Rufus and Target were both nursed back to health. Duke returned home a month later - the dogs had to stay behind.
As another soldier kept an eye on the dogs, Duke wrote a letter to a veterans assistance group called “Hope for the Warriors.” In the letter, Duke requested bringing the dogs home to him.
“This was going to mean a lot to him,” said Robin…

Facebook data harvester speaks out

Security researcher Ron Bowes tells BBC News why he collected and published the personal details of 100m Facebook users.

…One user said that the list showed “why people need to read the privacy agreements and everything they click through”.
In a statement to BBC News, Facebook confirmed that the information in the list was already freely available online.
“No private data is available or has been compromised,” the statement added.
That view is shared by Mr Bowes, who added that harvesting this data highlighted the possible risks users put themselves in.
“I am of the belief that, if I can do something then there are about 1,000 bad guys that can do it too.
“For that reason, I believe in open disclosure of issues like this, especially when there’s minimal potential for anybody to get hurt.
“Since this is already public information, I see very little harm in disclosing it.”
Digital trends
However, he said, it also highlighted a new trend that was emerging in the digital age.
“With traditional paper media, it wasn’t possible to compile 170 million records in a searchable format and distribute it, but now we can,” he…
