It’s OK to tell police officers to ‘F*ck off’

A Queensland magistrate has ruled that it is acceptable for people to tell police officers to “f*ck off”.

…”I told him it was an offence to swear at an officer and gave him two choices - a fine or be arrested.” Mr Kaitira opted to be put in handcuffs and taken to the watch house. After winning the landmark case he explained outside court why he pleaded not guilty - despite admitting to swearing at Constable Young. “On the night it was completely over the top and I didn’t think it was fair,” Mr Kaitira said.”Most people just cop a fine but I didn’t want to do that.” The defendant instead read through hundreds of similar legal cases before employing a leading criminal barrister and a solicitor to take on his public nuisance case at a cost of $4622.11. It was worth it for the horticulturist as Magistrate Smid said he was not satisfied Mr Kaitira committed an offence and police could be liable for his legal bills. “The defendant spoke normally, he had his hands in his pockets and walked away,” Magistrate Smid said. “It’s not the most polite way of speaking but those who walk the beat would be quiet immune to the…

9 Sideline Reporters Who’ve Probably Been Texted a Dong Pic

Being a sideline reporter is a pretty thankless gig. Unwanted advances must come fast and furious, which leads us to the question, “Who else of the sideline crew are the most likely to get hit with these dong messages?” Well, let’s take a look.

…s kind of like that grapefruit. She seems cold, reserved, and a little inhuman, all of which attracts a certain type of fan (read: stalker).
Flashers in the park operate the same way that Michelle Tafoya fans operate. The thrill is exposing themselves to something, rather than what may become of the exposure.
I could see Michelle Tafoya leaving the Linc after an Eagles games, getting into a Town Car, when her phone buzzes. She looks at the picture and says to herself,…

Bob Barr: Congress Should Pass Online Poker Licensing Bill

A key House committee voted 41 to 22 to pass a measure licensing online poker. While this vote does not guarantee that the measure will be brought to the full House for a vote, the fact that the legislation was reported at all was a rare breath of fresh air in a Congress increasingly devoid of interest in favor of individual freedom.

…The online gambling issue highlights the plight most Libertarians face in regard to voting. Most of us tend to agree more with the Republican talking points about fiscal policy and limiting the size of government. Then, they go and use government to limit individual freedoms in areas they feel their voting base would agree need to be addressed. It gets a little frustrating when you see how strongly they feel about online gambling but don’t seem to take that same zealous approach to controlling spending which I feel is far more important. In many ways, I think the Republicans attention to the social agenda led to Obama and the Dems taking control. Now, most logical folks see what a train wreck that is becoming, but I for one don’t really want to put the Republicans back in control if its just going to lead to more laws like the internet gambling and no emphasis on controlling the runaway spending. Price is my rep and he seems like a decent enough guy but I cannot give him my vote given his response on this…

Gum Disease May be Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease

Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.

…NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) — Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.
Study leader Dr. Angela Kamer and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis involving 20 years of data that supports a possible causal link between periodontal disease, or gum inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease, which involves brain inflammation.
“The research suggests that cognitively normal subjects with periodontal inflammation are at an increased risk of lower cognitive function compared to cognitively normal subjects with little or no periodontal inflammation,” Kamer said in a statement.
Kamer’s team then compared cognitive function at ages 50 and 70, using the Digit Symbol Test, a part of the standard measurement of adult IQ.
The researchers did an analysis of periodontal inflammation and cognitive function in 152 subjects in the Glistered Aging Study, involving Danish men and women over a 20-year period ending in 1984, when the…

Health Dept. Shuts Down Little Girl’s Lemonade Stand (PIC)

The 7-year-old got the idea for the stand from her favorite cartoon. She made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster and sold her first cup minutes after setting up. Everything was going great, until the lady with the clipboard showed up.

…All Julie Murphy wanted to do was sell some lemonade. The 7-year-old had gotten the idea for a stand from Olivia, her favorite cartoon pig.

The little girl made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster with a person saying “Yummy” and, with her mom’s help, finally set up her first stand at a Portland street fair last week. Everything was going great. Until, that is, a “lady with a clipboard” showed up.
That lady, if you hadn’t already figured it out, was from the health department. And she wasn’t coming to buy a cold drink.

AP Photo/Torsten Kjellstrand - The OregonianJulie Murphy, prior to having her illusions of a fair and just world being shattered. Technically, any lemonade stand in Oregon must be licensed. But inspectors, being mostly reasonable people, generally turn the other cheek when it comes to little kids trying to make a buck. Especially kids like Murphy, who was using hand sanitizer between cups to make sure her product was clean, and who is undeniably adorable. I mean, just look at her!…

Is Lebanon on the Brink of Violence?

Clashes with Israel’s Army and internal tensions over the investigation into the Hariri assassination have left the country on edge.

…s Shiite and Sunni communities. Street battles between the two sides in May 2008 left more than two dozen people dead. The tensions are running so high that president Bashar al-Assad of Syria and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia paid an unprecedented visit to Beirut last Friday in an effort to calm things down. But their intervention may not be enough. And if the internal tensions boil over at the same time the border conflict with Israel heats up, Lebanon could be facing a crisis worse than the bad old days of the civil war….

From the NYPD to JetBlue

Some airlines try to hire flight attendants who are young and attractive. JetBlue Airways has a type, too: cops and fire fighters.

…his take-charge manner and calm under fire were crucial and his corny jokes and upbeat nature were infectious.JetBlue decided from the beginning that hires didn’t have to have airline experience and it wanted to hire locally. When Mr. Spivey showed up, it dawned on recruiters that people who had been through emergencies routinely wouldn’t panic onboard airplanes. Fire fighters and police officers come from careers where they dealt with the public and provided customer service, jetBlue officials say. They’re used to working holidays. They knew how to handle people in stressful situations and could take command of an aircraft cabin. “Past experiences are predictive of future behavior,” Chief Executive David Barger says. “People who don’t get too high and don’t get too low, you want that in areas where decisions have to be made.” Spivey Family Leonard Spivey at his retirement party from the NY Fire Department in February 1995. Vicky Stennes, jetBlue’s vice president of inflight experience, notes that the…

…T Inc. and other companies on rules proposed by Chairman Julius Genachowski to regulate how phone and cable companies handle Web traffic such as Google s YouTube videos. Regulations or legislation that result would bind Google and Verizon as well.
We ve been working with Google for 10 months to reach an agreement on broadband policy, said Verizon spokesman David Fish. We are currently engaged in and committed to the negotiation process led by the FCC.
Nothing to Announce
Google has nothing to announce at this point, said Mistique Cano, a Washington-based spokeswoman, in an e-mail.
The two companies have become business allies through Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, which is co-owned by Verizon. Mobile phones that use software from Google, owner of the largest Internet search engine, helped Verizon s profit this year.
New York-based Verizon s earnings beat estimates last month after its wireless unit introduced phones running on Google s Android software, including Droids from…
