Microsoft to patch shortcut bug

An urgent security patch for a flaw in the way Microsoft Windows handles shortcuts is being issued on 2 August, the firm says.

…The flaw was found in mid-July and allows malicious hackers to embed commands in shortcuts that are executed when that quick link is used or viewed. Every version of Windows is vulnerable to the flaw.
The first exploits of the flaw were seeded via infected USB drives and network connections. While exploitation of the flaw was limited initially, the tempo of attacks via the bug have escalated since it was discovered and publicised.
Early attacks using the bug were aimed at the software control systems for critical infrastructure such as power stations.
Microsoft is signalling the severity of the problem by releasing an update outside its usual patch cycle. Security fixes are usually issued on the second Tuesday of every month.
Christopher Budd, senior security response manager at Microsoft, wrote on the company’s security blog: “We’re able to confirm that, in the past few days, we’ve seen an increase in attempts to exploit the vulnerability”….

Afghan leak: Wikileaks’ Assange denies ‘blood on

The founder of Wikileaks rejects US claims he has blood on his hands after releasing leaked documents on the Afghan war.

…”We will not be suppressed,” he said. “We will continue to expose abuses by this administration and others.”
The documents, which Wikileaks has dubbed the Afghan War Diary, were first described in news reports late on Sunday.
Among other revelations, they describe previously unreported civilian deaths, they claim members of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency have backed the Taliban in Afghanistan, and state that the Taliban has used surface-to-air missiles to down coalition aircraft.
On Thursday, Adm Mike Mullen expressed his outrage over the leaks at a press conference.
“Mr Assange can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family,” he said.
That was followed on Friday by a plea from White House aide Robert Gibbs for whoever possessed the Afghan files not to release any more.
“It is important that no more damage be done to our national…

UN Declares Clean Water a ‘Fundamental Human Right’

The UN declares that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right, in a non-binding resolution.

…The text of the resolution said that 884m people have no access to safe drinking water and more than 2.6bn lack access to basic sanitation.
It “declares the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of the right to life”.
It urges the international community to “scale up efforts to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable water and sanitation for all”.
Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and Botswana were among the countries which abstained from voting.
China, Russia, Germany, France, Spain and Brazil were among those supporting the resolution.
Portuguese lawyer Catarina de Albuquerque is due to report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva next year on countries’ obligations related to water and sanitation.
US delegate John Sammis said the resolution “falls far short of enjoying the unanimous support of member states and may even undermine the work underway in Geneva”.
Some countries said the resolution did not clearly define…

Facebook data harvester speaks out

Security researcher Ron Bowes tells BBC News why he collected and published the personal details of 100m Facebook users.

…One user said that the list showed “why people need to read the privacy agreements and everything they click through”.
In a statement to BBC News, Facebook confirmed that the information in the list was already freely available online.
“No private data is available or has been compromised,” the statement added.
That view is shared by Mr Bowes, who added that harvesting this data highlighted the possible risks users put themselves in.
“I am of the belief that, if I can do something then there are about 1,000 bad guys that can do it too.
“For that reason, I believe in open disclosure of issues like this, especially when there’s minimal potential for anybody to get hurt.
“Since this is already public information, I see very little harm in disclosing it.”
Digital trends
However, he said, it also highlighted a new trend that was emerging in the digital age.
“With traditional paper media, it wasn’t possible to compile 170 million records in a searchable format and distribute it, but now we can,” he…

Blast hits Japanese oil tanker near Oman

A Japanese oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz is damaged by an explosion its operators say may have been an “outside attack”.

…A Japanese oil tanker has been damaged in an incident in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman, injuring crew members.
An early report from the Japanese transport ministry said there had been an explosion on board the ship which could have been an attack.

There are no reports of any oil leaking from the tanker, the M Star.
The vessel, with 16 Filipino and 15 Indian crew members on board, had been bound for Chiba port near Tokyo when the incident occurred.

BP boss, Tony Haywood expected to resign on Monday

BP’s chief executive Tony Hayward has been negotiating his exit from the company, the BBC has learnt.

…But the explosion on the drilling rig off Louisiana on 20 April, which killed 11 workers and triggered the worst oil spill in US history, has raised questions about his leadership.
The 53-year-old has been heavily criticised by residents of the Gulf coast and US politicians for his handling of the clean-up operation and for a series of gaffes, including saying that he “just wanted his life back” and that the Gulf is a “big ocean” following the leak.
He was also taken to task for attending a sailing event off the Isle of Wight in June.
Mr Hayward was also publicly rebuked by members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee last month for “stonewalling” questions at a congressional hearing and of “kicking the can down the road”.
Responding to reports that Mr Hayward was expected to step down, US Congressman Ed Markey - who chairs a committee covering the oil spill issue - said: “While it’s now happy sailing for Tony Hayward, rough conditions will persist in the Gulf of Mexico for years to come because of…

German festival stampede kills 10

At least 10 people have been killed at the Love Parade electronic music festival in the German city of Duisburg, police have said.

…Another man told local television: “The pressure from behind become so high that… we couldn’t do anything any more. People were just pushed together until they fell over.”
Another participant, Isabel Schloesser, told Reuters: “There were piles of injured on the ground, some being resuscitated, others dead and covered with sheets. It was way too full in the afternoon, everybody wanted to get in.”
Police closed off an elevated motorway bridge to allow helicopters to land and evacuate victims.
City officials were said to have chosen not to evacuate the grounds of the day-long festival immediately, fearing it might spark more panic.
City spokesman Frank Kopatschek said: “The crisis meeting determined not to stop the event because at the moment there are too many people on the grounds.”
Many of those attending appeared unaware of what had happened.
German President Christian Wulff issued a statement saying: “It is terrible that such a catastrophe brought death, suffering and pain to a peaceful festival…

Bulger Killer Venables Pleads Guilty To Porn Charge

Jon Venables, one of the killers of two-year-old James Bulger, pleads guilty to charges of accessing and distributing indecent images of children.

…Robin Makin, the solicitor for James’s father Ralph Bulger, said giving somebody a false identity was a “liberal experiment” that was never really going to work.
Speaking outside the Old Bailey, he said: “What appears to have happened today, come out today, is that there must have been totally inadequate supervision and support from the probation service.”
He also said Mr Bulger was unhappy the judge had not taken into account James’s murder when sentencing.
Venables was banned from using a computer or the internet for five years and will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years upon any eventual release.
He pleaded guilty to three offences under the 1978 Protection of Children Act. The first involved downloading 57 indecent pictures of children between February 2009 and February 2010.
The second involved distributing three indecent photographs of children in February 2010, while a third involved distributing 42 images in February 2008.
It has also been revealed that Cheshire police…
