Count the quote-whoring in Pete Hammond’s Expendables Review

Boxoffice Magazine’s Pete Hammond has become such a parody of himself that it’s like his reviews are being written by a spambot.

…Wait, no!
Although the action scenes aren’t always directed coherently and the dialogue (from a script by Stallone and David Callaham) is often pedestrian
And this is coming from a man who clearly has a refined palate when it comes to wordplay.
you cannot fault the casting, which unites this team of genre names and lets them shine. Lundgren is quite engaging as the confused Gunner and Li is amusing and in control as Yin Yang. Statham provides solid, much needed support throughout and though he often steals the film from Stallone, 64 year old Sly proves he still got it. One scene, sure to be the film’s most talked about, unites Sly with his two other one-time superstar rivals, Bruce Willis and an unbilled Arnold Schwarzenegger, in amusing cameos in which they try to out-insult each other. Mickey Rourke also turns up in a handful of scenes as the gadget guy, Tool. Why not?
Oh, Pete, you tool, you just proved that Sly isn’t the only one who’s still got it….

Border Patrol Agent Let Illegals In the US For Sexual Favors

Rudy Trace Soliz III, a former Customs and Border Protection, pleaded guilty to alien smuggling and bribery, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced today. He did it “in return for sexual favors with the co-conspirator,” the feds say

…This hot desire converts to cold disdain.” (Hey, we’re nothing but classy here.)The female co-conspirator has already pleaded guilty to possession of more than five kilos of cocaine with intent to distribute. She had yet to be sentenced, so we guess Soliz figured she wouldn’t exactly keep his secret when she got on the stand. The transporting of illegal aliens conviction carries a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment, while the bribery conviction is punishable by a maximum 15-year-term of imprisonment, the U.S. Attorney’s office says. Each count of conviction is also punishable with fines of up to $250,000….

It’s OK to tell police officers to ‘F*ck off’

A Queensland magistrate has ruled that it is acceptable for people to tell police officers to “f*ck off”.

…”I told him it was an offence to swear at an officer and gave him two choices - a fine or be arrested.” Mr Kaitira opted to be put in handcuffs and taken to the watch house. After winning the landmark case he explained outside court why he pleaded not guilty - despite admitting to swearing at Constable Young. “On the night it was completely over the top and I didn’t think it was fair,” Mr Kaitira said.”Most people just cop a fine but I didn’t want to do that.” The defendant instead read through hundreds of similar legal cases before employing a leading criminal barrister and a solicitor to take on his public nuisance case at a cost of $4622.11. It was worth it for the horticulturist as Magistrate Smid said he was not satisfied Mr Kaitira committed an offence and police could be liable for his legal bills. “The defendant spoke normally, he had his hands in his pockets and walked away,” Magistrate Smid said. “It’s not the most polite way of speaking but those who walk the beat would be quiet immune to the…

Every Lightsaber Ignition and Retraction in 1 Awesome Video

The author of this video spent six hours picking every on-screen lightsaber ignition and retraction in movie chronological order. He said he only used clips “where you can see the lightsaber ignite/retract and not just hear it” intentionally.

…No matter how many times we watch this video showing every single lightsaber ignition and retraction in the Star Wars movies we can’t make the bloody Spyder III laser to ignite like that.

Gum Disease May be Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease

Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.

…NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) — Periodontal disease may signal increased risk of cognitive dysfunction associated with Alzheimer’s disease, New York University researchers found.
Study leader Dr. Angela Kamer and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis involving 20 years of data that supports a possible causal link between periodontal disease, or gum inflammation, and Alzheimer’s disease, which involves brain inflammation.
“The research suggests that cognitively normal subjects with periodontal inflammation are at an increased risk of lower cognitive function compared to cognitively normal subjects with little or no periodontal inflammation,” Kamer said in a statement.
Kamer’s team then compared cognitive function at ages 50 and 70, using the Digit Symbol Test, a part of the standard measurement of adult IQ.
The researchers did an analysis of periodontal inflammation and cognitive function in 152 subjects in the Glistered Aging Study, involving Danish men and women over a 20-year period ending in 1984, when the…

5 Musicians Who Should Really be President

We decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for.

…Yesterday, CNN reported that Wyclef Jean has entered himself into the bid for president in Haiti. This doesn’t mark the first time a celebrity has run for office, and while we wish him the best of luck, we have to wonder what qualifications he has other than being a member of the seminal ’90s group the Fugees.

Since this isn’t an election we can actually participate in, we decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for. See our picks after the jump….

It’s Time for Lady Gaga to Go Away

The onslaught of Lady Gaga has been fast and ubiquitous, and her Vanity Fair cover has the publicity machine working overtime. We love you, Gaga, but if you want to keep the love alive, you need to take a break.

…The onslaught of Lady Gaga has been fast and ubiquitous, and her Vanity Fair cover has the publicity machine working overtime. We love you, Gaga, but if you want to keep the love alive, you need to take a break.
In the barely two years that she’s been on the scene, Lady Gaga has done almost everything. She appeared on Saturday Night Live, the MTV Video Music Awards, the Grammys, the American Music Awards, the Today show, even the Miss Universe pageant. She’s been on the cover of every major magazine, including Billboard, Elle, Cosmopolitan, New York, Time, Out, and Rolling Stone…twice. Now there’s the Vanity Fair cover (with the requisite behind-the-scenes video shoot and slow trickle of images before the issue hits newsstands). And let’s not forget the endorsement deals like Polaroid, a line of headphones, and whatever it is she gets paid to do for Hello Kitty.
The strange thing is that Gaga hasn’t produced all that much material. Sure, one of her several songs “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Love Game,”…

What Not to Wear in a Courtroom

Apparently, t-shirts that say “Who the Fuck is Kanye West” is on that list.

…(That case was about a comparatively benign jeans and shirt ensemble a lawyer wore to court). And while Miss. Eneorj was in the hotspot as an alternate juror (not a party to the case or a lawyer), it the logic of the Bank case would seem to apply to all attendees at courtroom proceedings.
Going further, Bank also hit on what it means for restrictions to be viewpoint neutral. Under Bank, those that are discriminatory against a particular viewpoint will not fly. But with Miss. Eneorj, that is definitely not the case. The judge did not permit “Who the f*** is Stephen Colbert?” shirts and ban this young…

Rumors: 7-inch iPad, new iPods, early iPhone refresh

All of it could be coming as early as late 2010 or early 2011.

…even if they are ready by the end of August however, Apple typically announces new iPods in September. One of the new models is said to be a nano, while another is a touch. The third is so far a mystery, but could be a Shuffle based on a miniaturized touchscreen. The source also mentions the possibility of a three-inch touchscreen, though which iPod would get it is not known.Apple is also believed to be mostly finished developing a new iPad model, one with a 7-inch screen as opposed to the 9.7-inch LCD on current tablets. The hardware could be launched later this year, or early in 2011. Apple has long been said to be prototyping a 7-inch screen, even as far back as 2007….

Google to Stop Developing Wave

Google doesn’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects.

…and enabling third-party developers to build new tools like consumer gadgets for travel, or robots to check code. But despite these wins, and numerous loyal fans, Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked. We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects. The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users can easily liberate their content from Wave.Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science. We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance…
