There Are 129,864,880 Books in the Entire World

According to Google’s advanced algorithms, there are nearly 130 million books.

…s thesis languishing in a university library). Google admits their definition is imperfect, but it’s workable and similar to what ISBNs are supposed to represent. ISBN, or International Standard Book Numbers, are designed to be unique identifiers for books. Because they’ve only been around for 30-40 years and are used in mostly Western countries, they can’t be used by themselves. That’s why Google took data from the Library of Congress, WorldCat and others to find as many books as possible one billion raw records by the company’s count. Here’s where Google’s engineering talent comes into play. The company used countless algorithms to determine and discard duplicates in an effort that required more than 150 pieces of metadata related to the world’s books to evaluate whether each book record was unique or a duplicate of another. Analyzing this data resulted in 210 million unique books.Next, Google subtracted the millions of microforms, audio recordings, maps, t-shirts, turkey probles (yes, turkey probes) and…

Feds admit storing checkpoint body scan images

U.S. Marshals Service acknowledges it surreptitiously recorded tens of thousands of images with a millimeter wave system at the security checkpoint in a Florida courthouse.

by bp1212 August 4, 2010 8:28 AM PDT Unfortunately for you, people are choosing not to fly. The airlines are struggling to maintain any sort of profits whatsoever. When government get’s involved so heavily in a private corporation this is what we see. Loss of profit incentive and efficiency. Customer service and customer satisfaction are something the airlines have completely lost the ability to maintain. It’s not wonder the airlines are failing. I for one won’t fly unless there is no alternative. I’d rather drive somewhere than subject myself to the embarrassment that is the airline industry and the TSA. Like this 6 people like this comment

Facebook says ad spending is rocketing

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.

…yahoobuzz

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s most prominent liaison to Madison Avenue, said in an interview with BusinessWeek published Wednesday that the company’s biggest advertisers have boosted their spending on Facebook by tenfold, or even 20-fold, in the past year.
“Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us,” Sandberg told BusinessWeek. “They started buying with us a year ago. Now, they’re going big.”
Not that long ago, the common wisdom was that advertising on a social network simply wouldn’t translate into profits, a position held by figures as high-up as Google’s chief financial officer. His rationale was that people use social networks for communication and connection with friends, not for researching potential future buying decisions the way they would with a search engine….

10 Reasons Why You Should Jailbreak Your iOS Device Today

Now that it’s so easy to do–and so easy to undo with a simple restore–we have a list of the top ten reasons you should go jailbreak your device, right now.

…If I jailbreak, am I still able to use the Apple App store? Can I still do everything the same as I do now (except installing new Apple updates when available)?
I really want to enable my iPad to be able to use my iPhone’s cell reception - I think it’ll be one of the only things I use.
And one more question, will I be able to use jailbreakme.com as long as I don’t do an update that fixes the patch? Or will this website and way of jailbreaking go away?
Thanks….

Rumors: 7-inch iPad, new iPods, early iPhone refresh

All of it could be coming as early as late 2010 or early 2011.

…even if they are ready by the end of August however, Apple typically announces new iPods in September. One of the new models is said to be a nano, while another is a touch. The third is so far a mystery, but could be a Shuffle based on a miniaturized touchscreen. The source also mentions the possibility of a three-inch touchscreen, though which iPod would get it is not known.Apple is also believed to be mostly finished developing a new iPad model, one with a 7-inch screen as opposed to the 9.7-inch LCD on current tablets. The hardware could be launched later this year, or early in 2011. Apple has long been said to be prototyping a 7-inch screen, even as far back as 2007….

Amazing Chinese Concept: Cars Can Drive Under the Bus (Vid)

Amazing Chinese Concept envisions a Straddling Bus that cars can drive Underneath it as it does its regular rounds.

…The amazing concept will utilize the road space that is apparent between the street’s bridges and regular vehicles. This in turn will use up space that is not utilized in the first place, reduce building expenses and decrease congestion by allowing the traffic to continue regularly right underneath it.

The Straddling Bus will run regularly above normal cars and right beneath overpasses while still maintaining 40 km/h. Moreover, it has a capacity of 1200 passengers with 300 in each cart. Construction of such a project is also a great advantage, for it takes only 1 year to build 40 km, while a subway takes 3 years for the same distance. The best part is that it will not require a place to park, as regular buses do, since it can remain on the road and still allow the traffic to continue as normal.
As the Bus design presents, there are two ways for passengers to climb on this Straddling bus: by loading through the sides and also by a ladder to have passengers climb down from the overpasses and through the…

iPad management tools include camera reference

A reference in documents for the iPad’s enterprise management tools may back the presence of a camera in next-generation hardware.

…A reference in documents for the iPad’s enterprise management tools may back the presence of a camera in next-generation hardware, according to AppleInsider. In configuring an iPad, IT departments can choose to restrict a number of freedoms, such as Safari or iTunes access, or the amount of times a login can be tried before a unit wipes clean. Mentioned as one option in a PDF file is the ability to restrict camera use, even though that technology is currently missing. While the reference could just be a mistake carried over from iPhone documentation, Apple is believed to be working on a camera for a second-generation iPad, or have even abandoned plans for putting a camera in first-generation models. Early parts showed space for a MacBook-style webcam. The feature carried over into final production units, suggesting that Apple was forced to scrap webcam plans at the last minute. Future iPads could in theory support FaceTime calls….

Android May Now Be Largest Smartphone Platform in US

Android has overtaken BlackBerry and iPhone sales to hold the largest share of the smartphone market in the US, Canalys argued today.

…I think the biggest reason for this is there is only ONE Apple, and MANY Android OEMs. Sure, you can compare the PC market to the Mobile market, but Apple is selling (literally) every phone it makes while Android-based phones cannot make the same boast.

From the Apple-minded perspective, Android is far too fragmented and splintered–one phone will do ‘this’ while another won’t. Plus, I’m surprised that no-one mentions how tied-in to Google Apps the whole thing is–this is a real benefit for some but seen as a lock-in for others (yes, even Apple people). The iPhone works out of the box with Gmail, Yahoo, POP3, IMAP, and Exchange. Android does not share this ubiquity. Yahoo Mail is probably the most popular of all e-mail suffixes I know on my college campus (followed by Hotmail). Plus, Google Calendar is the only game in town for Calendar syncing on Android (at the moment).

I’m not slamming Android–in fact, I think many iPhone users should applaud Android since it drives competition for Apple. The iPhone 2G…
