…A home-brewed graphing calculator called Open SciCal promises to put a powerful machine built entirely from open-source hardware into the pockets of quant jocks and statisticians.
This is for the alpha nerds of the geek kingdom, says Matt Stack, who built Open SciCal. The calculator used to be the ultimate status symbol among the nerdiest of the nerds and I wanted to bring that back.
Open SciCal has a 4.3-inch color touchscreen and is just a little bigger than an iPhone. The device uses a BeagleBoard, a low-power, single-board computer that’s based on the same 1-GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor that drives most sophisticated smartphones today. It also has a 8-GB SD card, Wi-Fi capability and can run a web browser.
It’s about the same weight as my Logitech G9 mouse (which weighs about 1.6 pounds), says Stack.
A graphing calculator can take data sets and plot graphs in addition to running scientific functions on it. Many graphing calculators allow users to attach sensors to them so they can log data directly…

…With infrared photography, a film or image sensor sensitive to infrared light is used which blocks out most of the visible light spectrum. With foliage this creates a “wood effect.” It makes tree leaves and grass as reflective as snow. The effect is named after infrared pioneer Robert W. Wood and not the trees themselves. When the iPhone 4 hits retail shelves it will have to battle a gaggle of Android devices for consumer attention — the most significant of which is the HTC Evo. The Evo has one big advantage that Apple can’t beat.

…It’s really about the software not the hardware….. everyone should know that.The iPhone 4 looks super nice in the exterior, no offense but it’s still got that same old iPhone home screen it had back in 2007 just with the wallpaper. It’s really no change in experience. Video calling, the nicer screen, the gyroscope, the better camera it’s all something that enhances it but in reality it won’t make the iPhone any funner than it is now. The video calling is really the only evolutionary feature but I mean they crippled it with the whole WiFi thing. Either way what you experience on your iPhone right now will be the same as on the iPhone 4.On the other hand, the HTC EVO is pretty nice. The hardware is nice… it’s perfect. The software which is Android is just amazing. Google listens to you and actually delivers what you want. It’s like a platform controlled by people, a company that’s not making the decisions themeselves on what to include instead relying on what the people want. Flash, video calling, 4G, and…

China residents desiring an Apple iPad can buy counterfeit versions of the tablet from a number of tiny shops in Shenzhen, China, according to a Reuters report.
One shopkeeper surnamed Lin told Reuters that his iPad knock-off, which runs Windows and features three USB ports, is competitively priced: 2,800 yuan ($410) compared to Apple’s iPad, priced between $500 and $830. Reuters described the knock-off as a giant iPhone, and Lin said future generations would look even more like the real thing.
This is just the first rough version, Lin said in Cantonese. While the shape isn’t quite the same, the external appearance is very similar to the iPad, so we don’t think it will affect our sales that much.

That’s why Hewlett-Packard says it is working on a prototype of a solar-powered, lightweight computer display that can be wrapped around a soldier’s wrist.
The flexible display, just about 200 microns thick, could show data such as maps or directions. It will be powered by solar cells.
Soldiers in the infantry carry enormous amounts of batteries and gadgets that can weigh up to 70 pounds, says Carl Taussig, director of HP’s Information Surfaces lab, which is working on the project. We could make it easier for them.
The first prototypes will be offered to the military starting early next year, says Taussig.
The displays would be use E Ink’s display technology. But they will be manufactured using a roll-to-roll process, similar to the way ink is printed on paper.
Flexible displays are paper-like computer displays made almost entirely of plastic….

Surfing 30-foot waves, skiing off cliffs, and biking down the stairs in a Rio slum are the exact kind of heart-pumping insanity that most of us have far too much sense to attempt. That doesn’t mean you can’t get a glimpse of what it’s like, though.

…How does this relate to super awesome the iPad is? I mean is it the best thing ever, or just the best thing in our lifetime? Perhaps a helmet POV cam of an iPad unboxing would be more appropriate. Or maybe Steve Jobs wearing a helmetcam while watching these videos on the iPad….

The EOD suit’s rigid outer armor layer, the first and most important defense against this threat, is composed mainly of aramids: high-tech synthetic materials that are “strain-rate sensitive.” In other words, “the faster something hits them, the harder they become,” says Borkar. (Kevlar is simply the brand name of an aramid manufactured by DuPont.) The entire front-facing portion of the suit is reinforced from head to toe with hardened composites of two or more aramids, optimized for strength and lightness. This rigid layer can literally reflect or bounce some of the overpressure energy away from the technician, while also repelling flying fragmentation.

HTC may think the Nexus One shouldn’t go in pockets, but WTFJeans has enough pockets for every gadget you own. Except your laptop. Or your fax machine. I’m really doubting this fashion trend will end up as one big fail.
