We’re used to see atomic bombs images. From afar, they even look beautiful. But when one explodes near you, that immaculate light will burn your skin and make you bleed spontaneously. 65 years ago today, this is how that felt….

Then, I looked next door and I saw the father of neighboring family standing almost naked. His skin was peeling off all over his body and was hanging from finger tips. I talked to him but he was too exhausted to give me a reply. He was looking for his family desperately. The person in this picture was a neighbor of us. I think the family’s name was the Matsumotos.
When we were escaping from the edge of the bridge, we found this small girl crying and she asked us to help her mother. Just beside the girl, her mother was trapped by a fallen beam on top of the lower half of her body. Together with neighbors, we tried hard to remove the beam, but it was impossible without any tools.
Finally a fire broke out endangering us. So we had no choice but to leave her. She was conscious and we deeply bowed to her with clasped hands to apologize to her and then we left. About one hour later, it started raining heavily. There were large drops of black rain. I was…

Rudy Trace Soliz III, a former Customs and Border Protection, pleaded guilty to alien smuggling and bribery, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced today. He did it “in return for sexual favors with the co-conspirator,” the feds say

…No matter how many times we watch this video showing every single lightsaber ignition and retraction in the Star Wars movies we can’t make the bloody Spyder III laser to ignite like that.

This hilarious dollhouse is outfitted to look like a weed-growing house and is proudly on display in the window of a San Francisco cafe. The dollhouse features Pee Wee Herman dolls, Star Trek action figures, a magic brownie-baking kitchen, and (so my eyes tell me) real marijuana clippings.

…Let us now inspect the lounge. Here we have Pee Wee looking chipper in his rocking chair, while just behind him — not quite in the photo — are our beloved Star Trek action figures. Note the recurring pot leaf decor. And the vom-tastic Pepto Bismol carpet….

Health Dept. Shuts Down Little Girl’s Lemonade Stand (PIC)

The 7-year-old got the idea for the stand from her favorite cartoon. She made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster and sold her first cup minutes after setting up. Everything was going great, until the lady with the clipboard showed up.

…All Julie Murphy wanted to do was sell some lemonade. The 7-year-old had gotten the idea for a stand from Olivia, her favorite cartoon pig.

The little girl made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster with a person saying “Yummy” and, with her mom’s help, finally set up her first stand at a Portland street fair last week. Everything was going great. Until, that is, a “lady with a clipboard” showed up.
That lady, if you hadn’t already figured it out, was from the health department. And she wasn’t coming to buy a cold drink.

We decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for.

…Yesterday, CNN reported that Wyclef Jean has entered himself into the bid for president in Haiti. This doesn’t mark the first time a celebrity has run for office, and while we wish him the best of luck, we have to wonder what qualifications he has other than being a member of the seminal ’90s group the Fugees.

Since this isn’t an election we can actually participate in, we decided to start tallying up a few musicians we’d like to see run here in the United States. Keep in mind, these are the artists we think should run, not ones that we’d necessarily vote for. See our picks after the jump….

Google, Verizon Said to Have Deal on Web Traffic

Verizon Communications Inc. and Google Inc. reached a deal on how to handle Internet traffic, striking their own accord on policy being weighed by U.S. officials, two people briefed by the companies said today.

…T Inc. and other companies on rules proposed by Chairman Julius Genachowski to regulate how phone and cable companies handle Web traffic such as Google s YouTube videos. Regulations or legislation that result would bind Google and Verizon as well.
We ve been working with Google for 10 months to reach an agreement on broadband policy, said Verizon spokesman David Fish. We are currently engaged in and committed to the negotiation process led by the FCC.
Nothing to Announce
Google has nothing to announce at this point, said Mistique Cano, a Washington-based spokeswoman, in an e-mail.
The two companies have become business allies through Verizon Wireless, the largest U.S. wireless carrier, which is co-owned by Verizon. Mobile phones that use software from Google, owner of the largest Internet search engine, helped Verizon s profit this year.

How Long Will You Wait in Line at a Restaurant?

Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road.

…I’ve never walked into the Cheesecake Factory at dinner time and been able to sit down immediately. And I’ve abandoned a summer night trip to Glace because the line stretched out the door and down Main Street. The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza hilariously covered how long one should wait to be served. What about when you’re just trying to get inside a restaurant?
Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road. When I’m walking, I want drivers to be considerate and let me go if it’s raining, even if they have the right of way or I’m clearly jaywalking. I feel the same way about lines. If I beat the rush at Bo Lings’ dim sum and find myself seated as the wait approaches close to 45 minutes, I feel like I have won. And if I’m stuck at the Bonefish Grill’s bar, nailing down Bang Bang Shrimp, I can’t help glaring at the couple lingering over dessert. Serious Eats considered the issue of long…

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s most prominent liaison to Madison Avenue, said in an interview with BusinessWeek published Wednesday that the company’s biggest advertisers have boosted their spending on Facebook by tenfold, or even 20-fold, in the past year.
“Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us,” Sandberg told BusinessWeek. “They started buying with us a year ago. Now, they’re going big.”
Not that long ago, the common wisdom was that advertising on a social network simply wouldn’t translate into profits, a position held by figures as high-up as Google’s chief financial officer. His rationale was that people use social networks for communication and connection with friends, not for researching potential future buying decisions the way they would with a search engine….

Laura Dekker left her home port of Den Osse at 9:10 a.m., her spokesman Peter de Lange confirmed. “She will arrive in Portugal, near Lisbon, in two or three weeks,” de Lange said. “She is traveling in her yacht, Guppy, with her father until Lisbon where she will start the official solo sailing trip around the world.” Dekker’s attempt to circle the globe hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Last August, Dutch authorities placed Dekker under state care for two months after her parents refused to prevent her from undertaking the potentially dangerous voyage. Last October, a Dutch court ruled against letting Dekker sail solo around the world, saying she is not experienced enough to make the trip on her own.
