Will Portal 2 Scare Off Casual Gamers?

It came as no surprise that something as good as Portal appealed not only to a hardcore audience, but also casual gamers. The wait for Portal 2 is getting shorter, but as more information is revealed one thing keeps coming up: is Portal 2 going to be too hard? Will it scare off the casual fans Portal was able to pick up?

…When I initial heard about the Orange Box I thought Portal sounded like another tedious puzzle game. I lothe puzzle games. But I recently bought Orange Box for $18 used, and thought, what the hey I will try it out. I love the game. Finished the advanced maps and am still trying to capture gold in a few of the stages. It is a great game. With all that in mind though, I would have rather seen Valve put out another Orange Box, with multiple games again, that have a stand alone Portal game. The time it takes to get thru all the maps in Portal is just about perfect, and if you want to do more you can. If a full game of Portal is longer I think it would border on the repetitive, but it if is only as long as the first one, then I do not think people will be happy paying full game price for it….

AIG’s making money but when will it pay back the government?

As American International Group gears up to announce its latest quarterly performance on Friday, the elephant in the middle of the room is staying put. When will the insurance giant — now a shell of its former self — repay the $102 billion it still owes American taxpayers?

…The government decided to bail out AIG when the company was on the verge of collapse in September 2008. So far, the government has given out $136.5 billion in loans and direct payments, of which AIG (AIG, Fortune 500) still owes $102 billion. AIG rejected a deal earlier this year that could have helped the company cut its debt to taxpayers in half. Two months ago, talks to sell its Asian insurance unit AIA to British insurer Prudential (PUK) collapsed after the two companies haggled over a $30 billion price tag. On Friday, analysts think AIG will likely say it’s on track to raise a significant amount of cash from an initial public offering of AIA in the fall, but they don’t expect AIG to throw out any estimates as to how much it might raise through an IPO.Still, the IPO is clearly plan B for AIG. David Merkel, head of Aleph Investments, a money management firm, said AIG is unlikely to raise any more than $30 billion through an IPO. Merkel used to work for AIG as a life actuary about 20 years ago. The AIA…

Wanna Stop Global Warming? Eat Bugs.

Atkins? South Beach? Jenny Craig? Try “The Firefly Fast,” “The Caterpillar Cleanse,” or “The Stinkbug Slimdown.” An insect diet could be the solution to cooling our planet’s ever-warming climate.

…In fact, no less a body than the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization is formally considering his proposal.
The cultivation of livestock such as cows, pigs and sheep accounts for two-thirds of the world’s farmland and generates 20 percent of all greenhouse gases, reports The Guardian.
“There is a meat crisis,” van Huis told the Guardian. “The world population will grow from six billion now to nine billion by 2050 and we know people are consuming more meat. Twenty years ago the average was 20kg, it is now 50kg, and will be 80kg in 20 years. If we continue like this we will need another Earth.”
The climate killer in a meat diet is methane.
Emitted mostly by cows yes, that s via burps and farts the gas is 23 times more harmful for the ozone layer than carbon dioxide.
But a world with less methane isn’t the only value of an insect diet.
According to the Guardian:
The insects also produce 300 times less nitrous oxide, also a warming gas, and much less ammonia, a pollutant produced by pig and poultry…

Net neutrality is foremost free speech issue of our time

If we learned that the government was planning to limit our First Amendment rights, we’d be outraged. After all, our right to be heard is fundamental to our democracy.

…all have a stake in preserving First AmendmentEditor’s note: Sen. Al Franken was elected to the Senate as a member of the DFL (Democratic-Farmer-Labor) Party from Minnesota. He was sworn in July 2009 after a statewide hand recount. Before he joined the Senate, he spent 37 years as a comedy writer, author and radio talk show host. (CNN) — If we learned that the government was planning to limit our First Amendment rights, we’d be outraged. After all, our right to be heard is fundamental to our democracy. Well, our free speech rights are under assault — not from the government but from corporations seeking to control the flow of information in America. If that scares you as much as it scares me, then you need to care about net neutrality. “Net neutrality” sounds arcane, but it’s fundamental to free speech. The internet today is an open marketplace. If you have a product, you can sell it. If you have an opinion, you can blog about it. If you have an idea, you can share it with the world. And no matter who you…

One studio apartment, 20 rooms

Creative living in Hong Kong’s tight quarters. Hong Kong designer Gary Chang, has fashioned his 32-square-meter (350 square feet) apartment into a space that can transform into 20 separate rooms. His transformer apartment has garnered worldwide attention ……

…Chang’s unique design gives his apartment a spacious feel, at least by Hong Kong standards — the city of more than 7 million is among the most densely populated in the world, and the average apartment size is just 56 square meters (600 square feet). Chang understands well the overcrowded conditions that prevail in this city. The 47-year-old grew up in this apartment, sharing it with six others — his parents, three younger sisters and a tenant. In those days, it was divided into three bedrooms and Chang slept in the living room, little more than a corridor. “We had to learn the art of living close together,” Chang recalls. “One thing I remember is we spoke quietly.” As the urban population grows worldwide, interest in Chang’s apartment has gone global. A video on YouTube of the apartment has attracted 3.18 million viewers. “I have done quite a number of lectures, explaining my home everywhere, from New York to London, Paris,” Chang says. “Afterwards, people always come up to me to say, ‘Oh, my home is…

How Long Will You Wait in Line at a Restaurant?

Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road.

…I’ve never walked into the Cheesecake Factory at dinner time and been able to sit down immediately. And I’ve abandoned a summer night trip to Glace because the line stretched out the door and down Main Street. The Pitch’s Charles Ferruzza hilariously covered how long one should wait to be served. What about when you’re just trying to get inside a restaurant?
Long restaurant lines for me present the same dilemma as being a driver and a pedestrian. When I’m a driver, I want pedestrians to mind the signals and stay out of my road. When I’m walking, I want drivers to be considerate and let me go if it’s raining, even if they have the right of way or I’m clearly jaywalking. I feel the same way about lines. If I beat the rush at Bo Lings’ dim sum and find myself seated as the wait approaches close to 45 minutes, I feel like I have won. And if I’m stuck at the Bonefish Grill’s bar, nailing down Bang Bang Shrimp, I can’t help glaring at the couple lingering over dessert. Serious Eats considered the issue of long…
