Apology after girl’s lemonade stand shut down

A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.

…PORTLAND, Ore. A county official in Oregon has apologized after a 7-year-old’s business venture was soured because health inspectors shut down her lemonade stand.
Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen, the county’s top elected official, said Thursday that running a lemonade stand is a “classic iconic American kid thing to do.”
He says he called Julie Murphy’s mother, Maria Fife, to offer his apology and says she appreciated it.
Fife helped her daughter set up a lemonade stand last week at a local arts fair in northeast Portland. They had to pack up and leave after being approached by two inspectors who said the stand lacked a license.
Cogen says while the inspectors were doing their job, the rules are meant for professional food service operators. He adds he ran lemonade stands as a child….

There Are 129,864,880 Books in the Entire World

According to Google’s advanced algorithms, there are nearly 130 million books.

…s thesis languishing in a university library). Google admits their definition is imperfect, but it’s workable and similar to what ISBNs are supposed to represent. ISBN, or International Standard Book Numbers, are designed to be unique identifiers for books. Because they’ve only been around for 30-40 years and are used in mostly Western countries, they can’t be used by themselves. That’s why Google took data from the Library of Congress, WorldCat and others to find as many books as possible one billion raw records by the company’s count. Here’s where Google’s engineering talent comes into play. The company used countless algorithms to determine and discard duplicates in an effort that required more than 150 pieces of metadata related to the world’s books to evaluate whether each book record was unique or a duplicate of another. Analyzing this data resulted in 210 million unique books.Next, Google subtracted the millions of microforms, audio recordings, maps, t-shirts, turkey probles (yes, turkey probes) and…

Health Dept. Shuts Down Little Girl’s Lemonade Stand (PIC)

The 7-year-old got the idea for the stand from her favorite cartoon. She made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster and sold her first cup minutes after setting up. Everything was going great, until the lady with the clipboard showed up.

…All Julie Murphy wanted to do was sell some lemonade. The 7-year-old had gotten the idea for a stand from Olivia, her favorite cartoon pig.

The little girl made a list of supplies, drew a colorful poster with a person saying “Yummy” and, with her mom’s help, finally set up her first stand at a Portland street fair last week. Everything was going great. Until, that is, a “lady with a clipboard” showed up.
That lady, if you hadn’t already figured it out, was from the health department. And she wasn’t coming to buy a cold drink.

AP Photo/Torsten Kjellstrand - The OregonianJulie Murphy, prior to having her illusions of a fair and just world being shattered. Technically, any lemonade stand in Oregon must be licensed. But inspectors, being mostly reasonable people, generally turn the other cheek when it comes to little kids trying to make a buck. Especially kids like Murphy, who was using hand sanitizer between cups to make sure her product was clean, and who is undeniably adorable. I mean, just look at her!…

Ovulating Women Unconsciously Buy Sexier Clothing

Ovulating women unconsciously buy sexier clothes, says new research. The study finds that ovulating women unconsciously dress to impress — doing so not to impress men, but to outdo rival women during the handful of days each month when they are ovulating. “The desire for women at peak fertility to unconsciously choose products that enhance…

…”The desire for women at peak fertility to unconsciously choose products that enhance appearance is driven by a desire to outdo attractive rival women,” says Kristina Durante, a post-doctoral fellow at the Carlson School. “If you look more desirable than your competition, you are more likely to stand out.”
This research, forthcoming in the Journal of Consumer Research, provides some of the first evidence of how, why, and when consumer behavior is influenced by hormonal factors. Durante and co-authors focused their predictions on the fact that competition for a suitable partner would be influenced by a woman’s fertility status.
“We found that, when ovulating, women chose sexier fashion products when thinking about other attractive, local but not distant women,” says Durante. “If you are in New York, a woman who lives in LA isn’t going to be seen as competition.”
Although the end result is to attract the best romantic partner available, Durante’s research found that ovulating women’s choice of dress is…

Facebook says ad spending is rocketing

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.

…yahoobuzz

The very same advertisers who were once skeptical that buying up inventory on social networks could possibly do any good are now, apparently, going completely nuts about ads on Facebook.
Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s most prominent liaison to Madison Avenue, said in an interview with BusinessWeek published Wednesday that the company’s biggest advertisers have boosted their spending on Facebook by tenfold, or even 20-fold, in the past year.
“Two years ago the big brands were experimenting with us,” Sandberg told BusinessWeek. “They started buying with us a year ago. Now, they’re going big.”
Not that long ago, the common wisdom was that advertising on a social network simply wouldn’t translate into profits, a position held by figures as high-up as Google’s chief financial officer. His rationale was that people use social networks for communication and connection with friends, not for researching potential future buying decisions the way they would with a search engine….

Fannie and Freddie Help Lawyers Kick Families Out of Homes

How the federal housing agencies and some of the biggest bailed-out banks are helping shady lawyers make millions by pushing families out of their homes.

…AdvertisementAdvertise on MotherJones.comA Florida notary’s stamp is valid for four years, and its expiration date is visible on the imprint. But here in front of Ice were dozens of assignments notarized with stamps that hadn’t even existed until months in some cases nearly a year after the foreclosures were filed. Which meant Stern’s people were foreclosing first and doing their legal paperwork later. In effect, it also meant they were lying to the court an act that could get a lawyer disbarred or even prosecuted. “There’s no question that it’s pervasive,” says Tom Ice of the backdated documents nearly two dozen of which were verified by Mother Jones. “We’ve found tons of them.”
This all might seem like a legal technicality, but it’s not. The faster a foreclosure moves, the more difficult it is for a homeowner to fight it even if the case was filed in error. In March, upon discovering that Stern’s firm had fudged an assignment of mortgage in another case, a judge in central Florida’s Pasco County dismissed…
